ryobi planer mods

picked up a ryobi 78mm L22LN planer at a boot sale.

looks alot like the skil

cuts fine and flat.

does anyone know how to modify the front as it is a twist depth adjustment

also what is the base length of a cut down skil adjustment

thanks

Hi Pauluk. Check that:

Ifyou need, I can e-mail you the exploded view. The Ryobi L22LN is a great planer IMHO. I have had mine for a long long time.

cheers will have to go take it apart.

did you get to modify yours yet?

thanks

I pulled out the original spring and washer and replaced it with a longer but weaker spring to allow for an easy slide from “0” to max cut depth. I have still to figure out some lever device (Doc’s suggestion should work fine but I feel it will have to feature a lever on both sides of the front shoe to make it slide smoothly. I’m working on that right now, but since I have 1 458 752 other things to do, progress is slow…)

I’ll post shots of the modification if you like. Here’s the basic thing:

(You will notice that I have shortened back and front shoes to make it handle nose curves better. Also stuffed the “v” groove and lateral cut in the front shoe with aluminum-powder/epoxy and changed the original cord for a 20’ long one).

Oh, and every sharp corner and angle of the shoe has been ground to a rounded shape so as not to catch into foam…

Hi. If you need replacement parts for that Ryobi, give us a call. The base and shoe assembly is the same as the Powr Kraft and Shopmate versions that were made here in the USA. Motor case is slightly different, though I suspect armature, brushes and field may be the same. The modification we make for on-the-fly adjustment is labor extensive so that is why our shaper planer version is $100 more than the woodworkers version, which you have. Note that our mod has a lever in front just like the Skil. It is a very fine planer.

I have used the Bosch planer to clean my computer preshapes, works great ,blades really sharp, not quite a deep cut compared to hitachi or skl but much cleaner planing when you have to do shallow cuts.I liked the fact that there is a vaccume attachement built in that can blow left or right . check it out if you are looking to use it for fine tuning.
