Did a search for S-glass but did not find a good how to thread
From what i do remember and experienced: S-glass:
Should not be sanded down, you see it in the finished product, so glass+coat over, sand, gloss/finish coat
Just did a 6oz lam on a moontail… it doesnt seem to like curves, does it ? S-traight up only?
The wet out is dificult too, the weave is so tight, do you pro-s do a poor underneath the cloth first? Double lams? I only did the bottom on a 1.5# stringerless EPS. Can a decent backyarder glass 6+4 S-Glass in one go [small laps]?
Thank god my KK still isnt here !
Thanks for any tips and hints on this type of fabric.
I’m a backyarder talking PUPE here … no experience with 6oz s-glass but have used 4oz without any issues. I don’t do anything differnt, maybe the weave a little tighter, perhaps a bit stiffer, less pliable when tucking hanging laps around nose/tail outlines but no problems with saturation etc. did this one couple months back, a 5’7" 4+4x4oz all s-glass with green flourescent pigment. have not noticed any more resistance to foot dents, but at least it has not snapped, yet
S-glass is a bit harder to laminate with epoxy. Multiple layers just make it harder. Important to have the resin warm and liquid as possible. Colder conditions will only make it all the more difficult. If I use it I'll bury it under another layer of 4 or 6 warp. Sanding into the S will make the cloth show as a bright white.
If you use the S as a first layer and cut it at the rail edge line it can show at the lap where it wasn't cut cleanly, strings and wide spots will show. It is pretty minor, just depends how important cosmetics are. Darker colors only make it look worse.
Unless someone specifically asks for it I only use it on my personnal boards because the cloth is expensive.
My personnel experience is that it does make a difference in strength especially with epoxy.
Sorry for the highjack but I couldn't resist. Nice job Bud! Board is looking clean and your pinline is inspiring.
Pinlines, pinlines! The stuff of my nightmares. Did you do that one with a paint pen or did you go full old school with resin with a gloss coat?
