Hello everyone, I know that the most of you do really hate sups but, we like it or not, it's a field that is developing a lot.I opened this discussion to share opinions about shaping principles of sups. Please post everythign you know about these submarines!
They only work for the 10% of the population that is gay.
Not submarines, more like aircraft carriers.
Here’s everything I know about SUP design:
Wider noses are OK.
Narrower tails make them ride waves better.
Wide points forward.
Modern rail shapes work best.
You can get away with more concave up front in bigger surf than you can with surfboards, but you still need vee in the tail.
I’ve only done it a few times, but I’ve checked out a bunch of designs and talked to people who do it and know what they’re talking about.
SUPs work best in the conditions found in your garage rafters…

FINAL ANSWER. No additional discussion required.
In the beginning of this topic I didn't ask for critics about sups, but only about shaping principles of sups.So if you're here just to say silly things you're not welcome.Sometimes is better to keep your mouth shut and make others believe that you're stupid than to say something and leave any doubt about it.
Yes , SUP design is going in a hundred different directions right now. Just beginning to take off. Could be really big soon.
You have to ignore the haters, they wallow in their own misery. If it weren’t for SUP’s, they would be whining and crying about something else. Stand your ground and DO NOT take any crap from them. The whole surfing world is in an adjustment period. Some are willing to embrace the future, and some get dragged forward, kicking and screaming the whole way. It’s actually kind of entertaining at times. One thing I’ve noticed is that the better surfers don’t have much to say about the subject, while the marginal lower tier surfers seem to be the most vocal about it. I guess they just need to vent and SUP’s are an easy target!

Please excuse my ignorance on the science of SUP design.
If you could be so kind flipper could you list the one hundred different directions that SUP design is currently heading in as you previously stated .
I also noted that you too had much to say on the subject.
Cheers
Mooneemick
Just got in from a surf sesh.
Mr. Mooneemick, my comment about a hundred directions was intended to be taken figuratively, not literally. Sorry for the confusion.

Hey fishbone, Please go to one of my cyper catalogs, this one being SUP stuff www.standupfinsbylarryallison.blogspot.com I just posted a Joe Bark 14 ft Race with my Ninja Race fin design. It will give you a idea where some board designs and Fins have come to. Mahalo,Larry
If by “moving forward” you are referring to these guys doing their best imitation of the surfers from 1955 (6 guys paddle for the same wave and go straight), I wouldn’t call that a step forward. Just because Gerry and Laird are worn out and tired of having to wait their turn in a competitive lineup doesn’t mean that there’s some kind of pro-SUP bias among the better surfers.
SUPs for riding waves - one giant step forward for no-talent kooks, old people, and (LOL) “crossover athletes”, one giant step backwards for surfing.
SUP surfing is going to become something really big.....like retro' fish surfboards.....I remeber a few years ago i was walking to the spot with a retro' fish and surfers where laughing at me.And look now, everyone want one!I want to learn to shape sups and i definately will make it.
Search for “CarveNalu” and read all his posts. He was one of the first to begin making SUPs and has photographic documentation of him RIPPING on a SUP.
fishbone, llilibe is right, CarveNalu is pretty hardcore SUP and a really mellow, easy going guy. Check his site out at www.Paddlesurfhawaii.com

Thanks Guys!I'll try to contact the man but i wanted to know if sups need particular concaves. It's pretti obvious that a sup wants a vee under the tail but what about nose cocaves?Do they really need it?
Another way to enjoy the ocean … why does anyone care what someone else is riding?
fishbone,
mostly haters on this site. i don’t include myself in that group.
try www.standupzone.com and find your way to the “shape shack”. lots of pro shapers there who are happy to answer questions and share knowledge.
good luck.

Personally, I prefer a kayak over a SUP - but I have had some fun on a friend’s at Harris Reef (unsurfed usually - I wonder why more SUP’s & kayaks aren’t out there…)
