Safe way to seal wood? Water based epoxy?

Was browsing epoxies and came across this:

Anybody ever seen this type of stuff?

Hey SD,

Fixed your post so the link works, hope you don’t mind…

Resolcoat 1010 is suitable for all timber products as well as metals. It is however not suitable for fiberglass lamination.

Sounds great for chambered boards, solid wood boards like Roy’s…

I’d ask him what he thinks, he’s more in touch with solid wood boards and their properties, since you can’t use it to laminate…

From a quick read through their brochures, it seems like a legitimate product line, but other than the 1010, not very different from West System or System3 Epoxy. Re: their “low toxicity” claims: I don’t see an MSDS or equivalent information on-line; apparently you need to make an international call to get that information. That’s probably not a great way to build trust, but it probably shouldn’t be a fatal error if they do have good products. However, I suspect you will find that the 1010 water-based product doesn’t exhibit a lot of the characteristics that make epoxy attractive for board building (Grant already mentioned that it isn’t for laminating) Such coatings have apparently been around for a few years. Here is a generic paper on the type:

and here is a manufacturer of a two-part water borne acrylic “epoxy”:

Considering your location, these products might have cost benefits over equivalent imported products like West or System3. I am just a bit skeptical that there is anything revolutionary here. Incidentally, if you “back off” one folder level from the link you gave, all of their brochures may be downloaded from one page, ftp-style:

yebo hicks,

yeah I never url my url’s, I am a lazy unix type… LOL!!

But yeah I was thinking about the wood crew and the way some of them are not using fiberglass, just sealing the wood. The company Resoltech is certainly legit, I hear they deliver products for “green energy” windmill parks and also for aircraft manufacturing, and I use their “regular” laminating resin for my boards, hence my search on their website…

As for MSDS sheets, I am not sure whether there is a requirement in france for that, they do note on the french site that the “fiche de donnes securite” (safety information card) is available on request.

Hey guys… I noticed a statement in the add that reads, “Resolcoat 1010 is suitable for all timber products as well as metals. It is however not suitable for fiberglass lamination.”

So basically that shoots my using it for glassing a wood board right out of the water, unless it can be sanded and then laminated over with fiberglass cloth after it cures.

Yeah, that occurred to me. Guess I’ve been burned once too often by technology vendors who refuse to give out important information about their products unless you contact them directly, at which time you are subjected to an overwhelming and sometimes nearly eternal barrage of “salesmanship”. I’ve learned to smell them out, but may be carrying my noia (mine is the real thing  over to a venue where it doesn’t belong…
