Sailboat surfing clip

There was a thread a while back on this, found a new video and I just thought I would share it. the url is www.piratesracing.org/Chopper_Pirates.mov

Hey that’s a pretty amazing clip – you needa get yr hands on the latest Surfer’s Journal. In it you’ll find an article with photos from Micky Munoz’ collection over the last 30-40 yrs - and a lot of it has to do with sailing hi-tech cats and such - real good story - talks about surfing open ocean swells like tht on thes supa-hi tech catamarans.

Yeah, and don’t forget to search up that sailboat that tried to surf 10’ Ft.Point in SF.

I saw that one too. I dunno - somehow that one wasn’t as exhilarating as this one - ha ha. someone needs to post that link to so that the two different ‘styles’ can be appreciated.

Wow, that clip is awsome. Thanks a lot! -Carl

Wow. That’s insane! A 70 foot carbon fiber surfboard!!! I swear, I think they did a floater off one section. How fast do you think they were going? 30 knots?? Can you imagine the concentration needed for the helmsman?? One lapse and the results would be catastrophic.

I was in Marina del Rey yesterday and saw Roy Disney’s “Pyewacket” on the hard (I have to think Roy is behind the Pirates campaign)- 86 feet and a chunk of lead the size of an SUV swinging on a pendulum close to twenty feet blow the deck. And the mast so was tall it scared me just thinking of the sail area. A true work of art.

I also read the Mickey Munoz article. I loved what he said about just one good turn outweighing all the negatives. I was at the beach looking at knee to waist high surf going, “Naw.” But then I thought about “Just one good turn” and went out a got a couple good turns. Mde my day. Thanks Mickey.

Imagine doing that at 3 a.m. and it’s snowing. Imagine being below trying to sleep. Imagine repeating that routine for a week or more.

That was cool too, but in the background you see that one surfer do the leash twang thing that I hate with a passion! You could get a 5 second tube ride, do multiple lip bashes, and a 360 aeriel but if you end your wave like that you’re a kook in my book.

Pyewacket was just donated after the last TransPac to Orange Coast College. I’ve been invited to try out for the new crew. But, it’s still in the yard getting bottom paint and finishing a slight down tune modification to fit in Newport Harbor.

But, before we get a chance to sail on Pyewacket. I’m racing this boat to Puerto Vallarta starting Friday noon from San Diego.

Friday at noon? You’ve got time for a dawn patrol then…

I wish. But, I’ve got to car pool down and be at a skipper’s meeting at 8:30 AM. Although, if you’re interested I’ll be DPing Trestles tomorrow and Thursday before work.

Ragtime! I used to go down to the docks in Long Beach and just drool over that boat and the other sleds, but Ragtime was the best- the wood coachhouse, the black hull, the reverse shear, the gold leaf, the long chines. Lucky you.

If you get on the Pyewacket crew better wear diapers. I’d be pooping in my pants! The rig on that thing makes those on the original 70 raters look like dinghy spars.
