San Diego May 5-11

Coming into San Diego for a Nerdy Electronic Banking Convention in MAy and am trying to squeeze in this Fish Fry thing at Oceanside on Sunday if I can.

I hope to drop off a couple Ewa Beach bamboo-sando Obecalps with Keith Melville for you southcoast Swayers to play around with I guess till you break them… I"ll solicit the options online when they are done.

Let me know what else I should try and fit in surf wise and board shopping wise(since I’ll have an empty bag to fill to take home) while I’m in town.

Definitely not a fan of cold water, don’t even like the coldness of North Shore at times but when in rome do as… you know…

So drop me a line with your suggestions so I can start planning it out.

I got to do the business-suit thing in Mon-Wed but I’m open for some surfing and meeting some of you folk and the surf doesn’t have to be big just not polluted or hopefully not too crowded, I don’t like to fight for waves… And it’ll be the first time in over a decade I’ve had to surf in a wetsuit.

Aloha

Hey I’m down. I’ve never been to the surfermag fish thing, but I might stroll down there (to rob a few templates :Ð maybe )

May’s a fun time . . . sometimes you get the gnarly afternoon winds, and then 30 mins of evening glass off . . .the afternoon wind thing is more a spring thing, though it comes up in may. Best time is to hit surf in the morning. My job doesn’t allow that but I get off earlier than standard crowd for afternoons. Also SD gets polluted when it rains, so you have to wait 3 days, and may showers do occur.

Depending on the waters (i’ve been surfing only a year), last year it was around may when I switched to trunks and 2mm top, but for you I’d say go with a 3/2. I know of some breaks, but since I’m just working three diff breaks, I don’t know much. I know the way to Uppers (trestles) so if you want to hit that up, but hopefully there will be uncrowded peaks. Sd has lots of different breaks too, unfortunately most of them are crowded, and may is the start of newbie season, where inlanders come out to surf.

What type of boards you usually surf?

If the convention is the main downtown / harbour front convention center, traffic sucks for down town. Parking is difficult to find, so use the convention parking even if you pay extra $$ for it. Or you can park in the trolley stations and ride down to the convention center. Hopefully they (your work) will give you a rental. . .

Shopping wise, there are some good shops . . . but if you are looking for specific types of boards, different shops have different stuff. SD has diverse shops some of them specialized, such as there is one shop for shortboards only.

sounds kind of iffy

I’ll have to double check with Keith especially since I need to give him the stash of boards I’m bringing for the crew.

the convention hotel headquarters will be at the Marriott and Omni next to the convention center they run $220-$250 a night discounted. I’d prefer the Westin next to the shopping mall but it’s between $200-$300 a night as well.

I picked some hole in the wall nearby to save $ since I thought it was on my dime and since I might be playing hooky during the day. Wouldn’t want to get caught taking off with my boards and trunks by my peers, customers or vendors… Bad image this surfing stuff you know…

Any non-polluted wave in may in SD is a good wave I guess.

I still need to get a new wetsuit for my expanded girth and will check back with you folks before then…

You all need to vote on the prizes I’m dropping off at Keith’s anyway…

Anyone want to play surf tour guide to a lost Hawaiian in San Diego on Saturday 5/6/2006 let me know…

I think I’ll have a car but will not have one clue as to where to surf…

I pretty much have all day saturday to play around and maybe part of sunday…

howzit onelua! you from hau bush?

actually born and raised right in front of Shark Country but now regulated to Haubush Park or Johns unless I wanna walk down to surf by myself with the hammerheads which I usually prefer if there’s waves at my birthbreak.

we’re all still waiting for a big winter west wrap to happen so we can catch’em from the green bathroom to chickencreek (uncle Joe Park’s old place) but that hasn’t happened in years and if it does it’s always midweek… I hate hearing those “you should’ve been here…” stories from my friends on the weekends…

Also it depends on which Haubush you’re talking about…

The real one which is now abandoned and dead or the new one which is dead for other reasons like the homeless crackheads…

Also May of last year didn’t work out for me for a variety of really bad reasons…

But my original ticket with Hawaiian has to be rebooked by the end of Feb so I’ve got to be up there soon…

I don’t think the 3/4 Xcel I bought last April is going to be thick enough now…

Being from the Ewa plains I’d need a 6mm to not freeze to surf on the mainland…

If I’m coming with a board in tow I’ll let the local crew know my timetable…
