So I have done this cali trip a few times (from NY). First time I will be coming in through San Francisco though. Trip will be in early april, obviously waiting to see the forecast before I fully decide on board selection. I have both brought boards that I have created, and puchased boards off craigslist. After seeing some of the kick ass designs here on sways over the years, figured I would put out some feelers on any local shaped boards, or stuff someone is trying to unload for a reasonable price. Or if anyone has any suggestions on what to bring for best all around surf from San Fran down towards Encinitas. Longboards little tough with airlines, thinking about a 6’5 fish to bring, or a mini simmons. Anyways just trying to get some local peoples thoughts. Thanks for anyones time and help. - Jolly Mon
April is a month of low expectations in the bay area. Your twin fin would be a good call, as the majority of what you’ll be surfing will be beachbreak wind swell, may get lucky and see an early season south. Water around Sf will probably be 55 or so, unless the NW spring winds have been blowing for a while, then more like 52.
Santa Cruz, which should be on your stop list, is loaded with quality surf shops and shapers. Craigslist usually has some nice scores for moderate $$. If you’re lucky enough to get some swell while there, SC can be fun mid week.
Great scenery on Hwy #1 from SF south, mostly coast the whole way, plenty of waves, just need to keep your eyes open, consider picking up Surfing California or similar to know where to look depending on where you are. should be a fun trip!
Thanks for the advice almost all my trips to the west coast have been in northern San Diego area. Wanted to check out the redwoods this time around. Def going to bring a mini simmons and then see if I can score a decent board thats hard to find out this way. Hopefully a Von Sol. And hopefully these glass on fins dont get ripped off by the baggage handlers.
