Sand Through?

Hey guys need some advise. First before I start asking questions let me say that I do plan to gloss coat this board. It’s a 9’6" noserider glassed with 7.5 oz volan with 1 layer on the bottom two layers on the top with the deck patch only going 3/4 the way up the board. I’m in the sanding phase and have a few questions on the sanding and the final gloss coat process. I do have some experience as I built surfboards in the 70’s. So here’s where I need adise, and yes I’ve read all the archived posts.

  1. I’m getting small places where there’s a slight showing of the glass cloth on the rails. Do I need to fix this or will the gloss coat cover it?

  2. How much cloth can show before it becomes a problem? (just in case) I’m sanding the rails with 120 grit by hand.

  3. I have a medium pad on my sander, will that be enough if I’m doing the hard spots by hand or do I need a soft pad as well?

  4. Do I need to fill any of the pin holes other than cleaning the dust out. Will the glass coat fill and cover them

  5. I want a perfect gloss coat so do I us UV or MEK to get the best flow and leveling of the wax? I will be using actual glossing resin I purchased from Surf Supply Company.

  6. Any advise on preping the board so I don’t have to do anything but wet and dry sanding and polishing.

1 as long as the glass is not broen just visable gloos will cover it.

2 a fair amount just dont let it get deep enough to where its weak

3 med pad is fine, Block out the flat areas with a sanding block

4I wipe any pinholes with acetone and gloss should fill unless really small then I dig out with a razor to make it easier for resin to get in.

5 mek

6 whipe the whole board down with a tack cloth and blow it out reall well. Use a glossing brush.

MEK huh, what about having unlimited time to flow with UV?

Mike,

First and foremost,

Stop sanding when you see bare foam.

HAHA!

Gloss will make it look ok.

UV and gloss isn’t the best idea.

Brush on gloss with a gloss brush.

Push the puddle, not dipping the brush or pour more as you need it.

Pushing the puddle puts it on fast and even.

Side strokes then lengthwise.

Fast.

Walk away and let wax rise.

If you keep brushing you will wipe off the wax and it will look crappy.

Mike;   Best gloss I have ever done is with Mike Williams (Kokua) formula with 10% styrene and 3% wax added to silmar gloss resin.  18 -20 cc cat. per side in mid-70 degree weather.  If below temp, warm up resin first and shoot hot.  Push the puddles and walk away like Barry said.  Mike was the glasser for Plastic Fantasitic back in the day in HB and I always admired his pins and gloss.  Just my 2c…

So on a 9’6" noserider how much resin will I need for the deck and how much for the bottom? and what kind of brush, Chinese pure bristle? and how wide? as well as how much catalyst?

Mike,

You know those plastic buckets we all use?

About an 1" worth.

This time of year, don’t really need Styrene.

Fire that thing off @ 25-30 CC.

Work fast!

I would use 18 - 20 oz, per side.  3 - 4" badger brush or ?.  Don’t know what others prefer, I don’t do a lot of gloss coats anymore.  It’s really important for me to have a perfectly clean brush from bottom to deck so I tripple wash (acetone) and then shake, shake, shake!  I also have a good pair of needle nose tweezers for the inevitable bug or bristle…  just my 2c… or 2cc…LOL

Thanks guys great advise, still not sure what kind of brush. Know I’ve heard of Badger and Purdy. So where do I buy such a brush? What kind of bristle? Also what’s a dragging brush?

Just get a soft badger hair brush they are like 30 bucks. I have done perfect glosses with a chip brush. Its more about the flow out and pressure.

To explaine flow out you want to have done all your stokes while it is still the highest viscocity possible so it will level itself. Dont touch it!!!

Flow out. Is that where you push the glob of resin up and down the board while pouring it?

Put the glosson…Brush it out side to side…then tip to tail. do it twice, fast, cover theboard get it even and walk away…did anybody mention walk away… I think it might have been mentioned a few times… Whole process with gloss is about 10-15 minutes max. That means 5 minutes getting it on, 2 mins tiping out…then walk away.  Pulling the tape just after you clean the big expensive brush you bought for glossing.

Just walk away.

gravity is a wonderful thing.    Gloss must be done in a breeze free environment, and kick it hot.   The longer it sits wet the more airborne crap it gets…bugs, dog hair, scabs…(quit picking your scabs)

Just walk away.

Okay, got it. I’ve been crusing the net looking for a brush any recommendations? something easy in southern Calif.

Don’t remember where I got mine, have had it for a while, Home Depot has a 3" badger for around $18.  I think I got mine from a paint store, not many of those around today, LOL.  Just be sure to rinse it in acetone before you use it to wash out any loose hairs and squeeze it out with a paper towel, just my 2 c…

thanks for your help
