sanded gloss finish. I am going for that kinda matte finish, but still want a gloss coat. Do you guys seal it with an acrylic to avoid dirt and fingerprints? what grit do you sand to also? Pictures of your sanded gloss finishes anyone?
thanks

Howzit astevens, To tell you the truth I never put any finish over a sanded gloss but I imgin you could use the acrylic over it. Aloha,Kokua
600 grit or higher? Does it show fingerprints?
It’s inevitable that you’re going to get some finger prints on a matte surface, whether it’s an acrylic finish, or a sanded gloss. It’s easy enough to remove them with mineral spirits, or a household degreaser like 409 or Fantastik. Most production sanded glosses can be anywhere from 220 grit to 400 grit finishes.
I go to 400. That’s it.
400 is supposed to be 'the fastest'
600 grit gives a nice satin finish
another really nice finish is to sand to 400 and then hit it with a grey scotch brite pad with some polish on it. the polish will keep finger prints off. you can use a red scotchbrite pad if you want more of a matte finish. my typical sanded finish goes to 320 then a red scotchbrite pad with no polish (but this is sanded hotcoat not a sanded gloss coat)
sooooooo everyone has a different answer - even the same person will do it a bunch of diff ways but here are some ideas. have fun!
I don't get fingerprints on my 320 sanded finishes when I put a layer or two of future floor acrylic on it. then I rub it out with a green scotchbrite pad. if i do get finger prints, they come out when I get in the water.
Question is, does anyone put an acrylic over their sanded gloss finishes? What do you rub the shine off with(color scotchbrite pad)?
thanks
I don't think anyone sprays finish on sanded gloss. Usually thats done on sanded HC, then it is ''finished'' with scotchbrite, paper, whatever. The sanded gloss substitutes another coat of resin for the spray, then it is ''finished'' with paper, etc. So it is normally one or the other.
Thanks for the response. I'm doing a clear board, so I want it to stay clean. how resistant would the gloss coat be to fingerprints, oils, grime, and other uglies it may come in contact with?
Generally speaking, the sanded gloss is going to stay clean better than HC finish. The finer you sand/finish it out, the less dirt pickup also.
That’s what I’ve done when trying to create a really light board… sprayed a sanded hotcoat, then buffed the spray coat. Looked good, but I ended up breaking it after only a couple sessions.
So my advice to a-steve is to do a gloss/polished finish, which will resist smudging best of all. Either that, or skip the gloss coat, and just spray the sanded hotcoat.
