sander speeds

I have a dewalt multi speed sander/polisher (goes from 1000 to 3200 or so).

been working great.

dont use gloss just good thick hot coat.

I work 100 to 220 to 320 grit at about 1800-2000rpm with a realy soft pad. works fine. almost a gloss finnish.

a frend of mine just baught a grinder that goes from 4000 to 10000!

he swares it works for him.

just curious whats every one else doing. how fast do you go?

cheers,

oaktown

For a few boards I had a grinder with a top speed of 10000 rpm and that was way too fast. Even when I held it to lower speeds probably a couple to a few thousand rpm it was too fast. I just got a new sander that is adjustable from 600-3000 rpm and I never really go over 1500. Anything else seems to be asking for sand through or to burn the glass.

yeah mate-heat is a killer- especially where large tissue decals are involved. slow it down and bump up the grit.

just what I thought. I was going over with 320(my final) and stayed a little too long on one spot and got some burn and blister. I think I’ll sloww down as a matter of course.

had to sand out and patch it was so bad but only a dime size spot.

cheers.
