Just wondering how much attention to sanding of the hot coat is needed if I’m going to use gloss coat. Also, my orbital sander doesn’t have one of those spongy backing pads. It seems like that would make the sanding a lot easier/safer. true?
it’s pretty important. when you polish your gloss every bump, dip and zit will stick out like a sore thumb. you want to get all the shinies out. a softer pad wraps around corners, curves and concaves somewhat with a harder pad you’ll have to be more careful in those areas not to sand through.
Thanks. How fine a grit would you take the hotcoat to if it is to be glossed?
Mitchell, I have a soft power pad comming with my new fins. Don’t buy one!!!
Hi Mitchell, If the gloss is sanded to too fine of a grit, it won’t adhere to the hotcoat resin as well. I usually sand with 80 grit to get everything nice and even and take out the shinies. Then to 120 just to make sure. Then gloss away. There’s lots of info in the archives about sanding hotcoats and (even trickier) sanding the gloss so that you get a nice finish.
i go 100 then 150. Austin
