Im starting to sand the paint off the bottom of my 1965 Log. is there anything i should worry about as far as altering the shape of the bottom or anything. This paint is about 30years old so its taking some hard sanding to get through it as it is. I dont think there is anyway ill hit the cloth on this thing. But just if you guys have any tips on sanding it would be helpful.
Michael, First question is: You stated that you’re sanding the paint off your board. Do you mean colored resin? Sometimes the resin is colored and sometimes the color was applied to the hotcoat, then glossed. In any case, a sander-polisher will speed things up for you. Start with 80 grit on a rubber disk to remove material quickly, then change to a soft Power Pad with 100 grit to get closer. You’ll probably have to finish up by hand with 100 or 150 grit, depending on what you want to do with the board when you’re done. And yes, you can change the shape of the board by sanding unevenly. I’ve found that the best way to renew a board is to sand just to the weave, then re-hot coat and re-gloss. It takes a lot of sweat and patience, but you can get great results if you want to take the time. Good luck. Doug Schuch
Thanks Doug. From what I could see the paint was actually on the very outside. but maybe there could have been a very thin coat of resin over it and had just worn off.
