I used some 3M spray on stuff before and had a problem removing the sandpaper from the pad when I was done. I ended up damaging the pad by trying to use a razor to seperate the sandpaper from the pad. Is there a technique to avoid this?
Yes. Hair dryer, or heat gun, to soften the adhesive. With the sander running, I used to hold the pad flat on smooth concrete for a few seconds to heat the worn paper, which softed the adhesive. Peels off clean.
i bought som "fairing adhesive" from a contractor's supply store a few years back... it worked the same as the tacky or sticky stuff that the surf suppliers sell
great suggestions! Thanks - can wait to get home from work today and sand the crap out of some stuff! I'm making a pony/mini-fish/simmons type thing and preparing for the glassing step.
I'll probly just go with the 3M stuff since it's easily available then do that hairdryer technique
Howzit noob, Those are OK if you don't mind paying the extra money but if you do a lot of boards those pads just end up costing to much. I used Tacky for years and a brand named Clearco for paper I wanted to stay on, but have to use the heat gun to get the paper off when using it. I had 2 pads that were used only with Cleaco. Tackt is by far the best way to go but there are those that prefer 3M but you will get glue buildup with 3M.Aloha,Kokua
PS Plus the left over paper from the cut outs comes in handy for small areas
When you use 77, all you have to do is make sure you remove the paper when the sander pad is still warm...i.e, take the paper off right when your finished sanding and need to change. Don't let it sit and cool off.
Any auto paint store shpuld have self stick sand paper. There are also the glues made just for sticking paper to pads. Spme spray on and some that are in squeeze tubes.
