I was sanding a board today and thought I ought to put this up for other rookies like me. Probably a well known item for the Pro’s.
I first saw this on Cleanlines glassing video. I found them at Harbor Freight and have been using one for years. When your sand paper gets clogged up on your sanding pad, spin it a little and apply this eraser to the pad. It removes most of the clogging and you can use the sand paper longer. So. There you go.
They are, more or less, a giant Art Gum rubber eraser. I like them for sanding belts or fiber-backed sanding discs which tend to be expensive. Or for those times when your sanding _____ has gotten clogged and it’s late and there’s noplace open to get a new one.
Ha, that would have helped like 3 days ago. I was just smacking mine against my shoe or hitting it with my latex gloves. And conviently a harbor frieght just opened up near me. Thanks for the heads up.
I like the ones that come attached to a paint stick like this one:
I
sharpen the end of the stick with the sander–like a chisel, not to a
point–and I found that if your paper gets really clogged, you can
scrape off the bulk with the stick (while the sander is off) and then
use the rubber to remove what’s left.
Pretty cool trick that saves a little bit of time.
Dr. Zoidberg, That is how they were invented. A guy in a cabinet shop started to use his tennis shoe to clean the belt sander. The light went on and started producing them maybe 30 years ago. I agree with Doc. The cloth backed "paper" is what they are most useful on.
