A good selection of templates are really useful for creating new designs, they are just a load of curves after all. Not saying there is anything wrong with doing design on a computer but it’s definitely not the only way. Sorry Larva I can’t really help, I’m in pommie land.
My vote is for doing your own outlines… Drink the beer yourself!!! (I miss the california micro-brewries… drink some for me will ya? Lost Coast, mmmmmmm)
Yeah, a great plan-shape does help make a great board, but… IMHO people stress about it to too much!
Draw one by feel, (APS 3000 is easiest) tweak it around until you get something that is pleasing to your eye, then make a paper template from it.
Build it, ride it, and if it works, make a permanent template (ply/mdf whatever).
I believe if a shape looks good, it’ll ride great!
I know i’m always super stoked when getting a new ultra-sexy original board in the water for the first time.
Your eye is actually really sensitive/critical, it amazes me when I take measurement from two boards I have made VERY slightly different, but your eye can pick it up a mile away.
I figure I spend so much time looking down the lines of surboards that i’ve gotta trust myself at some stage…
Even if i’m still crap at it, it’s a great way to learn, then you really know what is going on with the outline of your board, and have so much more chance of picking up on the positive and negatives of it when it’s in the water.
Also, I feel great knowing that every curve on the board is my OWN design. Everyone wants to feel original!!
