SBC 5'10" Nug

Bill, how could I forget you!  Thanks for your kind words.  I have seen Greg Griffin’s work and am in total awe.  His stuff is amazing.  The fins that you have shown me were pretty nice as well.

Hi Scott. The only thing that I notice is the little voids in the ply.  Maybe next time try to get a better quality ply. The ply I’ve used comes from the scrap pile in my buddies cabinet shop.  No voids.  Come down for some beers and I’ll give you some.  Mike

I’m anxious to see the final pics and hear ride report on this one!

Thanks for checking back in Huck.  Work kind of came to a halt on this board over the past few weeks.  My next step will be to glass on the fins.

SBC stands for Spring/Summer Board Challenge doesn’t it?  Hahaha

Funny - this board in particular intrigues me. Please keep us updated, curious to see pics of finished board and hear how the 5 fin config works out on this.  Normally I’d be more patient, but then you came out blazing on this one, shaped and glassed by post one, then the fins got foiled to near perfection, and…

tick

tock

I started the process of putting the fins onto the board this weekend.  Below are the latest images.

I initially tacked the fins onto the board using 5 minute epoxy mixed with microballoons.  I did each fin one-at-time.  It was really boring standing there for five minutes holding the fin in place until the glue hardened.

Here you can see the anglizer tool that I used to set the cant on the fins.  The angle shown here was eight degrees.

Here it is as it currently stands.  It was a pretty frantic job to glass on five fins with KK epoxy at eighty five degrees.  I ended up doing the job in three separate mix batches.

Unfortunately, I missed the window in which the epoxy was flexible enough to cut with a razor blade.  Now I have a hardened mess on my hands.  At this point I am not sure how I should tackle this job.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Looks good, happy to see some progress! I would grab some tin snips and a sanding block with 60 grit for starters.

I also have above average dexterity with a disc sander, so can’t always recommend to others what I do behind closed doors

A dremel cutting wheel.  the little 1 1/2 inch ones?  Nice job on the fins.  I was born without the fin building gene.

all the best.

Looking good, Scott.  You can tack them on with a hot glue gun and dont’ have to stand there for five minutes. Love the anglizer tool.  Mike

You can also zip the fiberglass off the a round file, too. Works pretty well in the rear curves.  Then clean it up with disk sander or coarse paper. Did you put roving at the base or use the Thraikill method?  I like glass ons. Mike

Nice job Scott!

Hot glue sounds like a good idea!  Yes, that would have been much faster.

I used the Thrailkill method.  If you look closely in the picture you will see no fillets.  Also, you can see that the weave of the glass goes in several directions.  Per Bill’s advice you apply one layer with the weave going up/down/left/right.  The next layer should be rotated 45 degrees, followed by another layer of the original configuration, etc…

This method works great.  The fins feel rock solid.  I don’t see any need for a fillet.

 Aloha Scott,

I am curious about the point to point dimension of the arc tail (broomtail ?) on the board in this build.

Bill:  I’ll take some measurements when I get home from work tonight.  It isn’t a trash can lid… hahaha.  Is that what you wanted to hear?  All of our trash cans are big and boxy nowadays.  That was my first choice, but I couldn’t find anything around with a big enough radius.  I ended up using another surfboard template as a French curve to produce the shape.

I just looked at the first image on the first page of this thread.  It is datestamped 7/23/2014.  Oh man… has it really been a whole year since I started this project?  I am so slow!

Anyhow, I am hoping to finish it this week.  I finished sanding the fins and applied a second fill/hot coat last night.

lookin’ really good!

so, how many layers do you end up with on each side Swied?

I hit a little bit of speed bump with this build.  I should not have used the disk sander so aggressivly on on the rails.  It went all the way to the foam.  Now I have to do a ding repair before moving on to the next step.
