last minute, but still wanted to join the SBC. Started some weeks ago and now nearly finished.
It´s a 9´6 x 31´´ allround SUP and windsurfer for my wife and is built in heavy duty so I can also use it as a low wind wavesailing board.
Made from EPS core with full sandwich epoxy, bottom full carbon/wood, deck glass/kevlar
Update as I can´t reply to my thread??
Some more pictures of the finished board.
Lots of testing of new ideas in there. Made inserts for the leashplug and sidefins from wood. The deck is like on sailing yachts with the raw wood as standing area. Wet wood is perfect for barefoot paddling. Also made fins and paddel for the board with carbon/glas core and wood veneer.
@Greg: The rocker is going more into the surf direction. Trying to get more float by different rockerlines at the center and the rails. Rocker in the center is 1`` (2,5 cm) on the rails its 1.4´´ (3,5 cm) In the nose deep monoconcave flattens to the middle going into a doubleconcave to the tail with deepening vee. Nearly flat section from 35´´ to 47´´ (from tail). Sharp rails in the tail and sharp tucked under edge nearly up to the nose to get better planning and upwind abilities when windsurfing.
@Hans: I can build you one;-) I´m planning to go shorter as the next step. This is already the shorter version of an 10´6´´ that I made. There I also have the deep vee, which makes an remarkably fluent turning board considering the length. But of course it takes some planning power for windsurfing.
That is some great tech. Love the wood work. Thinking of building a similar one for myself, more of a light wind sailer or no wind paddler. Hope to hear of aride report.
Finally some ride report. Got some strange summer this year. Most of the time, when I could go there was too much (25+kn) or no wind, so I mainly went flat water paddling with the board.
To make it short: Mission accomplished, works as designed;-))
The paddling is great! Its remarkably stable and has a good directional stability. Even with my weight (190lbs) the paddling is very relaxed.
Two weeks ago I finally went windsurfing with the board. 6 - 20 knots wind and knee-high windswell. Went with my 6.2 wavesail sometimes overpowered but mostly underpowered. Most windsurfers quit for the day only some kiters still had fun. So did I!
Easy cruising, when underpowered and good planning action when powered up. No problems with going upwind. Not as fast as a freerider but extremely fast for a SUP.
The maneuverability was the best. Initiating turns is very easy. It holds nicely the line in the turn. Even chop is easy to handle. When pushing the rails really tight turns are possible.
Considering the xxl-size of the board (my normal sailboard is 8´1) I had a blast. Therefore I´m looking forward to test it in better waves. After this test I´m expecting a lot of fun;-)
The rocker is going more into the surf direction. Trying to get more float by different rockerlines at the center and the rails. Tail-Rocker in the centerline is 1`` (2,5 cm) on the rails its 1.4´´ (3,5 cm) In the nose deep monoconcave flattens to the middle going into a doubleconcave to the tail with deepening vee. Nearly flat section from 35´´ to 47´´ (from tail). Sharp rails in the tail and sharp tucked under edge nearly up to the nose to get better planning and upwind abilities when windsurfing.
Very nice board Jan. excellent craftsmanship with every detail. I believe you could put a mast foot box in any SUP that floats you and the rocker would be fine. The ability to put a large center fin would be the most important factor in getting up wind. My house it is side to side off shore 90% of the time so at least I can get home. Nice shot of all the reinforcments in the light density foam. Well thought out. obviously not your first board.
I’m planning to redo the repairs and cover it with EVA foam as a soft top. It’ll double as a Formula board for me and as a beginners board for my wife and daughter. (I’ll start a thread when I finally find the time)
But a board like yours would close the last GAP for low wind wavesurfing, so that I can be on the water every weekend
Great build, I’d really appreciate if you could share the detailed dimensions. I guess you don’t have a BoardCAD file? (You shared a lot already, but maybe you have more?)
