Kids grow like weeds and my 9 year old granddaughter Jessica is no exception. It was time to make her a larger SUP that she could paddle and it was also time to make her paddle a little longer too. Starting with her paddle, I cut the blade and handle off. Later spliced to a fiberglass shaft to lengthen it. That was the easy part and now for the board. I wanted to challenge myself and shape something totally out of the box and yet still make it my own. I was impressed with the Tomo Vanguard styles, the mini-Simmons concept and the ancient Hawaiian Alaia designs with the parallel rails and flatter rockers. I tried in incorporate these designs but soften any hard edges and eliminated any channels off the bottom. I came up with this 8’x20” (nose) x 23.75” (wide) x 18.75” (tail) x 3.75” (thick). I reduced the volume on the rails so the decked is domed. The bottom starts off with a subtle single concave into a double concave. The EPS blanked was sealed using Solarez ZEROVOC epoxy resin and the board was glassed using with a clear, red and black acid splash design without any cut lines. I went wild and what you see is what you get. Instead of boring you with shaping and glassing pictures, I wanted to show how I use cheap yoga pads I buy from Ross as SUP deck pads.
stoked! it is special to get 3 generations in the water together!
Very cool - $9 vs $135, haha! Awesome. Gives me ideas for tail stomp pad.
