Scenes from the Official Ceremony to make Lennox a Surfing Reserve

Yesterday was the official ceremony to make Lennox (stretching down to FlatRock) a dedicated surfing reserve.

It was an epic ceremony and a very graphic illustration of how surfing is being considered part of the mainstream social and political landscape in Aus.

Here are some shots my wife took. I shot some video and when I figure it out will post a brilliant speech from Rabbit.

There were some cool boards there illustrating the vital role this region has had on surfboard design.

Lot of legends present…the one glaring omission was Greenough.

Rod Steeles, Phil Myers, Tony Kelly (minister for Lands), Rabbit Bartholomew, Michael Peterson, Wayne Lazarus, Don Munro.

I’ll post the board pics separately.

Celebrations went on well into the night at the Bowlo…I’m only just recovering from the hangover.

People were STOKED.

This is a really cool event. Australia seems to understand that surf culture is making significant contribution to mankind. I dream about the day that North Americans realize how relevant a contribution surf culture has made on it’s shores.

Congratulations for a great step forward.

Kind regards,

Steve Coletta

Amen Cornelius. Thanks for the awesome Post Lennox!! This seems like a huge victory…

I know a lot of people say here :" hey it’s just surfing, no-one in power gives a shit about it" but I can tell you from the ground there is a very different mood and reality here.

Work I am doing with Neil Lazarow from Griffith Uni has shown that surfing is the main economic driver of the southern Gold Coast…it is culturally, historically and now increasingly economically important…that realisation is bringing surfers to the table and into the boardrooms were the big decisions that affect our and our kids lives are being made.

Anyway here are some more boards for those who say there is no creativity left in surf board design…

can’t see surftech coming out with one of these models anytime soon.

Amidst all the bleak geo-political threads, this is a breath of fresh country air.

Congrats on achieving this designation for Lennox Head and thanks for all the board pics.

Those early channel bottoms bring back some memories.

And I’m always for a good Clash quote (safe european home), as long as it doesn’t take off

into another global economics debate…

Brocky looks good with his teeth in!! Good to see MP out and about…has he got back in the water??? Even if it was to body surf or an Isky Lid or anything…it would be an inspiration!

I was in Lennox a couple of times that day. Had some fun but sloppy waves on the point during the formalities etc and later had dinner with friends in town that night. My sons went to the pub where we picked them up looking a bit cheery, like lots of folk at the pub.

Hopefully the waves will get better before I have to head home on the WE.

Beautiful place and beautiful wave. I was lucky enough to get a chance to surf there in the late eighties. What I wouldn’t give to see Rabbit, Cheyne, an Michael Peterson out their surfing on vintage equipment.

Great stuff Lennox, a few crew from Evans went up there and said it was a great day (and the Pub was fun too). Thanks for the pictures, I always wanted one of those free flight channel singles as a grom and as a surfer with aboriginal heritage it’s good to see that the traditional owners of the land played a big role in the ceremony. As an elder once told me - the old fellas (those gone to the dreaming) are always watching.
