I know this has been discussed at one time or another but; what’s a good “sealer” one can put on a new sanded finish board? I know that many would never even do this, but I thought I read about something like an acrylic sealer or “Mop N Glo” that works. I don’t want to spray laquer seal the board, I just want to use something that won’t yellow or flake off as it ages and can protect. Any help out there?
I checked the archives and read about “Future”. I read about how you have to use it sparingly and scotch brite it afterwards too. What would happen if I only applied a good quality car wax directly to the new sanded finished board? Any problems I could encounter with yellowing or chalking in the water?
Jasco, clear wet-look Cure-Seal. This is a water based sealer. It works great on surfboards. I got it a OSH. You need to reapply after a year or 2, but it is easy to do.
if there is a SMART-N-FINAL store in your area- go there the name is written in spanish- para aviso -supercrylic and the brand is IRIS. buy the jug that has the gold label- it is the one with ‘high solids’- shake well and place acrylic into a squirt bottle- the technique for application is sinilar to glossing- no need to tape off at mid-rail- squirt a relatively good amount in the center of the board(along the stringer) and use a clean damp sponge(a cheap one) and wipe the acrylic out to the rails as if you were smoothing out a gloss coat- be careful of drips on the underside of your work peice- the idea is to apply the acrylic thick enough to ‘coat’ the top, bottom, and rails of your board but not thick on the side of runny. there is no need to thin out or thicken the acrylic- scotch-brite in between coats until you reach a desired finish- you may apply up to three coats on each side and the board will come out shiney- similar to that look of a kicked gloss that has yet to be sanded- allow the acrylic to completely dry between coats before scotch-brite and application of further coats.
oh yeah- the jug should last forever and only costs around 7-10 dollars
and, there is no need to re-apply unless you wish
