I am about to do a repair where I am putting a layer of divinycell over a layer of glass, which is over PU foam poured and sanded over EPS for a repair. The 2 part foam is well bonded to the Eps and strong
Do you seal 2 part PU foam prior to laminating over it?. What is the best microballoon (glass, phenolic, Q cell, mix) to add to the epoxy and how much/consistency? Does it matter?
How do you seal divinicell prior to laminating, specifically? What is the best microballoon (glass, phenolic, Q cell, mix) to add to the epoxy and how much/consistency? Does it matter?
Then I will vacuuum the PU to the divinycell with a layer of 4 oz glass between them, then sand the divinycell flush, seal it, and laminate final glass layers.
Also, in the fiberglass hawaii delam repari video they seal it with just UV polyester resin. I am doing eposy so wondered how things would be different.
Divinycell will suck resin at its surface. Lots of open bubbles there. You can spread plain resin, but I suggest q-cell and epoxy to a mayo consistency and spread it on the surface for lightness. Laminate it as normal after that.
I always screed on a thin qcell mix to create a barrrier to stop too much resin being soaked up. I often layup directly ontop of the wet bog screed, but I have friends that will let the bog set, then lightly sand then laminate on top. Apparently they get the lightest result like this but it is more work and I think defeats the purpose soemwhat, since the wet on wet bond should be the strongest and least likely to delam.
the best filler to add to your mix is one that is the lightest, which is phenolic i believe. West do a good one (I think they call it super light weight filler), but as you may know it is brown and looks crappy. most people use Qcell…
Epoxy vs PE resin. do it exactly the same!
I read the OP again and the trick is to bog screed the PU foam then place the glass ontop and wet out sparingly.
Quickly screed a very thin layer of bog onto the divynicel,(scrape off all excess).
Place the divynicel onto the part, holding it in place with some masking tape, then vac bag it all up.
Should work everytime. Its exactly how i’ve done many windsurfer repairs. Good Luck!!!
If you want to use Divinycell without filling the holes, and not soaking resin, it can be done.
Lay out the cloth on the PU blank. Wet out the cloth and and lay the Divinycell over it. Into the bag. The Divinycell won’t wick epoxy into it.
Now you want to laminate over the Divinylcell for the outer shell.
Use a wet out table to saturate the cloth. Put the wet cloth onto the divinycell. Cover it with thin .4 mil painters plastic, and just poke enough holes in the plastic to let any air out. ** No Peel Ply**, because that will wick off your epoxy. You want to keep all the epoxy that is in the pre wet cloth right where it is. Use some masking tale to hold the .4 mil plastic in place.
Then put it into the vacuum bag.
THEN TURN THE BAG OVER SO THE WET CLOTH IS BELOW THE DIVINYCELL!
If you do it quick enough so the epoxy doesn’t have time to drain out into the foam, it will stay in the cloth. Gravity is your friend.
For what it’s worth, Corecell is much stronger than Divinycell.
When cured, the painters plastic will peel righ off the cured epoxy.
