I read through a dozen threads without any luck and hoping you could guide me to a production surfboard laminator in San Diego that uses UV Polyester Resin.
I will need full service glassing, install and finish sanding - Thank you - Sebastian
I would try and see if SHarp Eye does then he is about the only one I know that does. Most production shops only use UV for little fills and touch ups.
For the MOST PART it doesnt really have a need or place in a full production setting. Unless you are really cramped on space or for I need it tomorrow team boards. On the rack or under your feet, you cant tell a UV from non UV board.
Guys - I appreciate the feedback and perspective. My first and foremost accountability is to listen to and support my client’s request. Their motive could be many things, their request is simple.
It would seem like a smarter idea to try and figure out what your customer is really after … like why they want an all UV cure board ( what happens when they find out the glasser set the fin boxes with MEKP? or used it in the hotcoat?). Supporting a customer is not just taking crazy requests, Its steeing them in the right direction for what they actually want to get out of the end product.
The “smile and take their money” attitude seems to quickly turn into the “sell them anything we got on the rack” attitude. This is a bummer.
I must be in the wrong forum asking for referrals. They (and I) understand the fin install (required) and hotcoat are traditional MEKP.
I could and should have explained in great detail that both they and I have extensive FRP manufacturing backgrounds, but limited local resources specifically tailored to UV Poly lamination.
I’m not selling, no bummer and not too crazy of a request
No you are in the right forum, 2 people gave you the best answers they could muster for your area.
Sharp Eye and possibly Global,
UV isnt for production, what more do you want? The first post by a knowledgable source said you probably arent going to find it, what were you expecting 36 more answers of shops?
Dont get butthurt and cranky about it geez. Dont get shitty when several people try to help you and you dont get the answer you want, they at least took the time to TRY to help you out.
And what the hell does your FRP background matter in you looking for a UV glasser? You’re building surfboards not sheeting bathrooms and commercial kitchens. About the only correlation is if you are manufacturing the sheets yourself and you can use the same tints as in surfboards. Otherwise who cares? You just sound like a whiney kook.
And futhermore no the customer isnt always right, sometimes customers are idiots and part of being a good boardbuilder and business man is diagnosing why they want UV what they expect to achieve etc, like WideAwake posted. Then explaining and coaching them that IT DOESNT MAKE A DIFFERENCE but obviously you cant correlate that to your customer so instead you come back on the internet and get all cranky.
Heres an idea, if you arent going to accept peoples help and input on a forum, than kick rocks, pick up your phone and call all the Glassers down here so they can each tell you the same thing these guys did.
