Secret Society of Seattle Shapers

Is there anyone in Seattle interested in participating in some sort of loosely organized shaping group with intentions of meeting a few times a month to work on surfboards? It would require you to schedule some time away from work, family, responsibilities, and the TV, to meet with other like-minded Seattle shapers. Maybe even enjoy some beverages while we discuss shaping/glassing/surfing techniques. I’m sure we could come up with enough differnt projects to keep us interested on a weekly basis.

I wouldn’t mind trying to organize this if I knew there were others interested.

KIK,

I’m down. I am super busy but It would be cool to have some beers or something and talk shop. Let’s see who else is interested.

Oh yea…and what part of town are you in?

I’m on Capitol Hill, around 15th ave.

It would be nice to try and find a space large enough for a few people and and a project surfboard.

Maybe I could come up from Oly…

Or you guys could come down…???..

Geez where were you guys in 73-80?

would’ve made putting up walking around UW in my REI blue Goretex in that depressing cold NW drizzle somewhat more bearable.

Things sure have changed up there.

73-80?

nah

started working fulltime at Seattle First National Bank of Washington in 78 (before the Penn Square scandal for those of you finance history buffs) ended up getting stuck there till 90’…

Banking was fun then…

big old fat vice presidents smoking stogies in three piece suits wearing suspenders and all…

73-74 were the worst years trying to get aclimated to Seattle rain from the hot Ewa plains.

Making boards would’ve been been a fun distraction from the never ending drizzle.

I did glass a board once in the emergency stairwell of mercer hall using poopee poly… Talk about stinking up the place…

I know what you mean, Oneula. I was raised and lived 20+ years on Ewa Beach Road and moved up here a decade ago. I like it, and was amazed at how many guys shaped and rode their own boards in Washington. The first board that was loaned to me to get into the water was shaped by none other than Paul Jensen. It was a really good board. The shaper/surfers here made me want to shape again, even though I hadn’t done so since the mid eighties. I’d drive in from west of the sound to check it out.
