See these Harbour vids on Youtube?

Anyone else see these vids on Youtube? From the intros, it looks like these were produced by Harbour. I hope it’s cool that they ended up on youtube (and here).

For a newb like myself I find it helpful to see some of these steps ‘in action’. Also cool to see what a production operation looks like.

http://harboursurfboards.com/ has da originals

i’m not going to look at all those, but i’d be willing to guess that they’re the same as what’s been posted on the Harbour website for years. bottom right corner of the home page. great stuff.

Anyone know what kind of router bit he’s using to cut the planshape out of the blank while following his original template? I imagine he has the bit pulled down to the thickness of the template to avoid routing the template as well. Anyone know if I’m close on thisd assumption?

Dave

i imagine the bit has a bearing on it to prevent it from ripping into the template.

Hi Dave! Don’t know about the guy in the video and what type of bit he is using.

I’ve routed out two boards with a regular long bit that has no bearing on it. It can be done, but You have to fiddle around and really put the bit in the right position for it not to cut into the template.

Another thing i found is that the template has to be very accurate without any dips and with a really smooth curve if You want to use it for routing.

This is a bit less critical when you draw a line off the template and then saw it out

Routing out with a template is fun and smooth and You will get that 90 degree angle spot on straight away.

If You have a router, definitely try it. If You have to buy a new bit for doing it, maybe try and find one with a bearing on it. Less chance of routing into Your template with a bearing on Your bit

Good luck

What size and type of bit is it that you use? Maybe I’ll try that.

Dave

The bit that I use was supplied to me by the people who sell Red X fins and install kits. So the bit is the same that I use for routing out for the Redx boxes that go all the way through the board.

Sorry but can’t help with the measurements as my bit is in my workshop 4hours drive from where I live most of the time…but roughly the bit is aroun 3 inches long on the actual cutting bit.

On the two boards I cut out the bit actually didn’t make it all the way to the deck foam (routing from the bottom) so in some small spots I had to take off the last foam ridge with a surform. No big problem.

But if You intend to get a bit get one that’s maybe a bit longer say 4 inches??

Someone on the forum should know what length to get, maybe put up a new topic. Or might be in the archives?

It’s a good way to get Your outline done. Good accuracy and once Youve done it a couple of times should be fairly quick too.
