just finished shaping a 6’6" rounded pintail for a surf trip to costa rica my dimensions are 12 1/2" x 18 1/4" x 14 1/2" and 2 5/8 thick, at 7" from the tail it’s 1 5/8" thick. I would really like to install a fin box and ride it as a single, I really like the feel of single fins on smaller boards but one this small will be a first. Has anyone out there ever built one similar to this or ridden one like it. Would 7" in be to far from the tail?
Yes…a board like that will work best with a fin front edge about 12-12.5 inches up from the tail. Probably an 8.5 inch deep fin…some fins have base widths up to 7 inches, so you really want the box to 5 inches from the tail. The finbox needs a little over 1 inch depth for proper installation.
In any case, if you know what fin you want to use, make sure you put the finbox someplace where you can get to the fore-aft position you want.
Course, you could always glass it on and use really thin tails…
