Just got in my last few blanks to shape before I go to costa yesterday…and I cannot decide what design to use for a 7’6".
I am 5’10" 165 pounds, and in pretty good shape…I already have a 7’6" andreini hull, and a 6’6"x18.25 semi gun.
There are two waves I could shape this board for, a mushier long point break…or Salsa brava. I was told you dont need anything over 7’ for Salsa (not really sure if I would want to be out there if it was that big anyway) Thats what i have the 6’6" for. And obviously the hull for the point break. So what else could I use this 7’6" for???
5 fin bonzer pod/fun gun? Single fin gun? 2+1 eggy setup?
The beach break can get pretty narly too so I was leaning more towards a high performance semi.
Please let me know what you guys think and it would be great to include dimensions, fin type and placement and all that.
The first picture attached is Salsa which is just a below sea level suckout barrell wave, and the second two are the point which is just the funnest wave I have ever surfed.
Seems for those waves, I’d consider a wider version of your smaller minigun, maybe splitting the difference in length, but making the width closer to 20" for better performance in waves that size and power.
Thanks for the reply Lee. What would you recommend for the nose and tails? 12-12.5? And would you say move the wp up 4-6 inches? for a thruster bottom…very slight single to double concave? Or should I single fin it? Thanks again
Nose and tail width have to fit into the curve you draw in your template. What looks good usually is…
WPoint placement should mostly depend on your surfing style and the waves you ride. If you like to lean forward to trim after turning, going down the line, WPoint forward works well…
If you like to stomp the tail and flick the board vert all the time, WPoint centered or slightly back works well…
Single, twin, quad, tri, five fin, whatever, they all work.
You’ve got a couple boards, figure what you need to change to make BOTH of them better, and incorperate into the new design.
While Id like to help, your post is a bit confusing…there are contradictions in there…but its safe to say that a 7’6 for overhead SB with steep curvy faces is not a great option.
That length in general can be tricky to satisfy some.
Having said that, I’ll post a couple pics of my ‘longboard’…designed for an big outside musher wave with power and be better able to compete with some greedy longboarders that occupy the place. I also wanted the board to project well. But really wanted to make something different than the usual 6’4.
7’6 x 20.5 x 2.5…the only thing I would change is the excessive entry rocker…a bit too much I think. The board has great flex and turns quite sharp for a board that size.
Craftee thanks for the help, thats exactly the problem…way too much contradiction. I need to make the board for either one or the other…86 the Salsa board already have one that will be good enough.
I am gonna go for a five fin setup on a shape like the pic that you attached. Out of curiosity what are the nose and tail widths? For a larger wave 5 fin board im guessing that I want to keep the bottom a little more flat.?.? Without as much concave I normally put in my shortboard bonzers. What is the tail rocker on yours…or a good amount for a board like that about 2.5?
Any other design hints and tips that you can think of would be appreciated.
Thank you both craftee and LeeDD as you guys are shapers that I look up to and trust that you know what you are talking about.
Dont know much about 5’s…maybe someone can chime in to help you. Altho I reckon the board would work fine with fin variations…big center, small fronts…vice versa, whatever…feel changes…its all good.
