hello, again folks im building a 7,2 semi gun for myself for the bigger days. Im still relativly new to shaping just finished my first board which came out great besides the glassing job which i managed to salvage in the end haha, but any ways here are the shapes i drew up in aku shaper comments and thoughts greatly appreciated! btw i looked in the archives and just could’nt find the information i was looking for! but this is also a thread where every one building/has built a semi gun or gun can post!
Where are you located and what wave is the board intended for? For me, in Southern California, I would say that’s a bit too much rocker. I’d be looking at something like 5-1/2" and 2-1/2", even less for my local deepwater reef break. Also, in the outline, it seems to me you’ve pinched the nose a bit too much- too narrow. I think that makes for a shorter rail line and a squirrely board, something you don’t necessarily want in a semi gun.
Mind you, I’m an amateur like yourself, so those with more knowledge should chime in.
Here’s a couple of my attempts-
7-1 x 20 bonzer 5 (delam special for those in the know). This board was magic last winter at the beaches when it got solid.
7-4 x 20-1/4 Cove board for that mushier, deep water wave.
Your plan shape looks really wierd, pretty jacked up..not a good flow. Were you trying to fix certain number in? Fix the front half of the board, make the curve more organic and flow. Right now it looks like 2 straight angles coming off of a pretty decent rear end. Fill out the nose.
A good semi gun will have a good continious curve in the plan shape. No abrupt edges or angles. No stingers or wings.
Also like Liliiliiibilly said you got way too much rocker in the nose. Use 5 nose and 2 3/4 or 3 in the tail. I like a bit more tail rocker in my semi guns because I like to turn a bit more at the bottom and top of waves.
Richard - try these numbers and see how they look to you - n 6" - 2 1/8’ t- 1 1/4" - 2 5/8" template 11" n, 12 3/4" t, got these off a Cali semi shaped by a Hawaiian shaper with the initials P R. Good luck.
Having a little more tail rocker also helps to release water off the tail with water and energy moving up the face a steep fast wave such as Pipeline demands a board That will release that water you are cutting across. Other wise you get sucked up the face and that is never a good thing.
hey, guys sorry to start up a dead thread again, but i just finished cutting the outline of the board, it looks good i think i might have made it a little to skinny, at its widest point its about 17.5 inches. this board is for me during the winter session when waves start getting in the 10-12ft range. the dims are 7,2X17.5X2.75

hey ken, how do you think it would work for a guy around 6ft and 180lbs in double overhead surf and bigger? or am i wasting my time building it for that audiance?
