I was planning on going with 6" nose rocker and 2 3/4 tail rocker. My problem is the only blank i have close to this right now is a 8’4" VI longboard blank. The nose only shows a 5 3/8 NR and 3" TR. Can i squeeze enough rocker out of this blank or should i wait and order a gun blank? orrrr should my rocker be different?
i also plan of glassing a 6oz bottom and 6 x 6oz deck.
fins 3.5 and 11.5 up, 1 1/8 from rail and 1/8 toe in RED X boxes.
Surfer is ~210 lb, 6’, athletic type, competant surfer, and wears 6/5/4 rubber.
That blank will work fine, just make a couple of full passes nose to tail to get the thickness to about 2 3/4. Push the rocker from the bottom up at the nose and tail. It will work great.
that’s what i was thinking as well. But will foam around the nose change much if i take more off the bottom? like it would be if i were to take too much from the center?
single under the front foot, double in front of fins, to flat out the tail. The foam is EPS so the density should stay the same through the blank. Other blanks vary by maker?
hey, not to be demeaning, but what size waves will it be ridden in? I know people who use their “semi gun” in waves chest to a foot over head, when I am still using my standard shortboard. But, i think that blank wqilll work fine, take all length off the tail and shape in more rocker like resin head said.
he wants it for DOH+ days. For a few offshore spots that are the suck out over ledge type spots. Ones that take off are make it or your over the falls. He said it will be ridden just a few times a year but would like it for his quiver.
6’8"- 7’2" are his standard bigger guy shortboard sizes.
does 2 3/4" thk sound appropriate with a 6, 6+6oz glass? or should I use some 4 oz somewhere?
Actually if your taking length off of the board take it off the nose, or more like a 80/20 split. This is more of a rider preference thing, but keeping a lot of tail rocker helps a bigger board more responsive in the ass. The flatter nose keeps the paddle power up, and the length helps you get into waves quicker, so your not making as many late drops.
Still push the nose rocker from the cut as much as possible, but 5 or 5 1/2 inches of nose rocker is plenty for a semi gun. Tail rocker is where you get the responsiveness.
For semiguns, I keep in mind the term “functional.” Like, I’d recommned not going crazy on bottom contours for a semigun. The goal is control, especially if he’s only going to be in surf that big a couple times a year. Contours should be subtle and simple, and so should your rocker, foil and outline, so that it becomes easier to ride rather than more technical. For example, I like to use simply, flowing rocker with well thought-out vee placement rather than try to match more rocker combined with concaves. Simple, predictable, control-oriented design features over “performance” oriented design features.
It would be different if he surfs half the year in big surf. But that’s not the case. I’d be thinking, “what’s gonna give this guy an advantage,” rather than, “what’s gonna allow him to be able to rip those monsters up.”
All this, of course, coming from an East Coaster, who has only ever built three semiguns… two for big winter East Coast waves and one for Sunset (God help them all!).
I’m shaping something almost identical and I’m the same size (timing of this thread is perfect!!), 7’10, 20.5 @ center 12.5 tail, 11.5 nose, 2 3/4 thick, 5.75 NR and 2.75 TR. Shallow single concave (1/16th) to slight vee but would like to go with a 2+1 setup, hoping someone could help with fin placement and size. Thanks
I started this board this past winter and it been on the shelf since. Now i need to finish it. Looking at my notes of fin placement for this thing i believe they should be changed.
The board is to the sanded hotcoat stage.
Boxes will be RED X. Thrusters.
I would say rear fin at 3.5".
Front fins at 13", 1 1/8" from rail, and 1/8’’ toe.
The fins come with 4* of cant and i would think that is a little low. What cant should i put on these?
And to the rest of my dimensions look good or should i change something?
