sfoam blanks

Hey all,

I’m just curious how many of you have tried sfoam blanks. What were your observations? Did you like it? What would you suggest to someone who has only shaped a handful of conventional boards before they jump in?

aye up,

what is Sfoam? is it short for styro-foam or is it a brand name? Either way, no not tried it, wood only so far!

they make EPS blanks, www.sfoam.com, never tried it though.

Cheers, just found the link in another thread. I think I’ll make my own out of insulating EPS from Wickse’s £12.00 rather than $60 plus shipping. If only Wyckse’s sold epoxy.

Jase (MMM)

Is Wyckse’s the UK equivalent to Home Depot?

Go for it. The less experience with conventional foam the better.( you won’t learn bad habits). If you are just starting it makes no difference. The first few you learn on and the ones after become nicer and nicer. Get the instructional videos if you have no one who can personally help you.

Polystyrene is great. Check RobOgilies post in the resources section under epoxy construction or Greg Loehr’s posts in the archives regardubg making blanks… I find my polystyrene to be pretty floaty and go thinner than with polyurethane blanks. i’ll probably never buy a pu blank again. Give it a go.

how many years use do you get out of them ?

Jees, why didn’t I think of that? Oh that’s it, cos my wife would castrate me.

Presumably the geezer is qualified???

Jase (MMM)

Yes, Wickes the UK equivalent of Home depot, marginally better than B&Q, heaps better than Do-Shit-All and infinately better than Homebase, still pants though. All of the above sell nothing of any use (corrugated timber etc) and are all staffed by folk who were turned down by Mcdonalds but seem to have aquired the same customer service skills and uniform/overalls.

sfoam blanks are absolutely amazing!

if you want an eps blank you should go with sfoam

very light weight and strong - nice stringers - easy to shape

you can get your template pre cut; which turns out very nicely

the owner of sfoam is a really nice guy and knows what makes a good blank

just wish he would sell some pu blanks too

I’m interested in these blanks.

Talk to me about these stringers.

Are you seeing bending and force imbalances that we see with the stringers on most other blanks?

Also can you be more specific about what you like about their foam? Working with it? The weight? The final outcome of the boards, etc.

Also, if you can, talk to me about the flex differences you’re seeing with these boards compared to PU.

Thanks

Jimmy

yo jimmyfreese

the stringer is made from high density pvc foam - it weighs the same or less than the bass wood ones - its also pretty flexy while your shaping but once youve glassed the blank the flex is gone - sfoam also has other stringers you can select other than pvc foam

the foam is easy to shape, hard if you know what i mean – stronger in a sense than pu blanks when you touch it, and very LIGHT

the board finished turns out to be very light

the only negative factor is that youv gotta seal them since their eps - i hate sealing

if you get these blanks make sure you seal them well otherwise a really sucky thing will occur - like nasty bumps all over your board

sorry about the semi-late response man

overall the blanks are sweet - you should try them out

Cool thanks a lot for the info.

Seal 'em.

I’m interested in the stringers and they potential lack of force imbalances. Probably worth a try.

A little pricey for these blanks but if they’re good, they’re good.

Thanks again.

Hopefully sometime soon I’ll get a few and see how they go.
