Shane Surfboards old mal - worth anything?

Guy at work has asked me to help him fix up an old shane stedman mal. It’s in decent condition apart from some dings around the nose and tail and some minor deck sinking around the stringer.

Has a redwood stringer and the logo is the same as the one below. Number on the stringer is 038 so i’m guessing this is the 38th board he made? I’m putting the year in 1963 when he started in his eastwood factory (or was it his mum’s house?)

Anybody in the board collection game know if this would hold any significant value? The guy was planning on patching it up so his brother could use it when he visits, but said if its worth some money he’ll go halvies with me if i fix and sell it! I wouldn’t mind keeping it to be honest!

forgot the logo pic.

Need more pics, lots of pics please. I’m in Queenscliff.

Eh!

Can’t tell much from the logo snapshot.

Can’t say much

other than foam has aged well.

More photo’s!

This. Can’t tell much about a board’s value just by a (really tiny) pic of the lam.

It’s worth $1,903.21.    So now what?

So, the one pic you posted isn’t even a pic of the board in question?

How long is a piece of string?

i’m not asking for an exact value based on condition, i’m asking if the board has potential to be sought after from a collectors point of view based on the era and shaper. Shane Stedman is a pretty well known shaper from that era and this seems like one of his earlier examples.

condition is reasonable, definitely not mint, some patrched dings and a rough fix up job on the tail. could be restored fairly easily.

no need to carry on like a bunch of obnoxious wankers.

I can’t tell what any board is worth without riding it.

a friend has more old Yaters than you can imagine some so mint it boogles the mind priceless? that being said Yater tells him the boards i am making now are way better than the boards then," heck we were just learning " When i asked my friend about all the boards he say the current Yaters are his favorite and he has been a long boarder since the early 60’s,so when you ask for value to whom or why?Whats a wanker little hobbitt ???Wish i still had my Terry Fitz NS/Hawaii shaped board from the 70’s he only shaped a handful 2 that i know of that winter one of the best boards i ever rode priceless…

No way for others to put a price on nostalgia. Up to the individual.

Yater’s words reflect the mind of a true craftsman. Never get stagnant, always improve.

I own a Yater from around 2002. It’s priceless to me. It was expensive and worth every dollar. Renny said it was the highest price he’d ever sold an 8’0" for. I’m sure he’s topped the number since then.

Pirate- Sways really doesn’t have a hardcore collector’s orientation; the requests for pictures indicates the member’s interest in design (if it’s a beautifully crafted, classically funtional or unusual design it would add to it’s appeal) and condition (another element of merit, for craftspeople). Since you didn’t supply decent pictures (which you were asked for), without design or condition information- people really can’t comment!

That just leaves value based on history (“provenance”), which I guess is what you expected? Hope you hear from someone. Anyway, we’d all like to see more pictures, post 'em if you can.

Pirate,

I would try and get in touch with the Layback longboard club. Jarrett and Scotty love their old mals and might be able to help.

If you took it down to Bellambi when a club day is on you would probably get some interest.

Also there is a guy (Billy Morris I think) who rides and restores them who lives at Thirroul that may also have an idea of the value.

good luck.

Scot

Thanks Scot,

I’m at bulli so i’ll try and meet up with those guys and see if they are interested!

Cheers for the leads!

join the “Vintage Surfboard Collectors” group on facebook. GET PICTURES!!!

I was just about to suggest the same thing. Lots of Shanes show up in that group. Most of the members seem to be from OZ and there’s quite a few who know a lot about Shane in particular.

So, if you’re on Facebook join up

And yes, you need photos.
