Shaped Blanks

Need everyones imput on a little question.

My glasser/buddy closed his doors and moved away

to sell real estate. I need to find a new glasser

and was wondering how long I can let a shaped

board set without yellowing. I have blanks of

US Blanks, Walker & Bennett waiting to be shaped

depending on what everyone’s opinion is.

Let me know what you think!!! How long?

Are you anywhere near Orange County ,California ?

Blanks can go for months…as long as they are kept cool, and in a realitively dark place.Store them flat with as little stress on the rocker as possible.Bag the shaped ones completely in black trash bags…that will keep the yellowing down to a very slow crawl. If there is yellowing later on ,just screen it off/down to white again or paint it.Herb

Thanks Herb,

is Long Beach close enough?

I have used the black bag method in the past

but didn’t really know if it was working or not.

I have enough room to store 10 or so shaped

blanks so if I bag them how long do you think

they would keep? Hope you are feeling ok,

BKB

glass em cousin.

you can shape em ,you can glass em TOO!!!

I AM HERE TO SAY

GEEEEEEEEEEV UM!

you may wish to do otherwise but…

Velzy told russell

you gotta glass your own boards

somebody else glasses em,

well they make the money…

and they control the finished product…es verdad? daddio?

how long will they last?

they will last in pergatory forever

or twenty minutes

if you shape em and glass em thats how long they have to wait

twenty minutes.

every glass job will get better…

…ambrose…

Yep glass em.

Every shaper should glass a board, every glasser should shape a board, at least once anyway.

Personally I love glassing and enjoy it as much if not more than shapping, maybe I’m wierd that way, but when it’s finished I can truely put my name to the board knowing no one else (apart from all the good folk on sways) has had a hand in its creation.

But each to his own, I’ve never had a shaped blank hanging around for more than a few days before its glassed so I could’nt tell you how long it would last, but I’d guess as long as its stored in a cool dry place out of the way of UV and harms way it would be fine.

Where were you getting them glassed ? Chas ?

I have several in your area that would be more than happy to have your business right now ,brother…PM me and I’ll get you started…good glassers that care about the shapes they glass. Herb

Anyone else need glassing in my area ? If so, I can just post the names and numbers.Herb

I’ve had blanks that I shaped and discarded, because they were like 2 or 3 years old . I stored them properly so they didn’t yellow enough to make a difference,no warping ,but because they were so old… they gassed off all the float…How do I know thet gassed off all the float ?..I know.Herb

Cheers Herb,

Thats interesting, I didn’t consider that would be a problem, but it makes perfect sence.

Thanks Ambrose:

Glassing them is not the problem, its the sanding.

I have done a lot of glassing so I can do a pro

job, but sanded my way thru college here in Cali

and now really hate it so if I can throw some money

at someone who is not burnt out, that’s what I do.

Thanks Herb:

Mystic is too busy, I can’t get anyone on tap, they

are often out of the office.

Aloha is busy too. Dent I don’t do.

I’m trying to get ahold of Channin or Clearwater as

the boards (most of them) are going to Indo & I

want the full treatment!

By the way, Barronna was the shop in the south

bay. I really miss Chito!!!

a well glassed board is easier to get the full treatment

perhaps

than a shaped blank.

or a sander can be had

at a price

and…

the

shortest distance

between two points

is through the bowl.

where was pathagoras

when I said that…?

mebe paddling back out

…ambrose…

lam and hot coat em

them and the stabiity will increase

they store very well.

didnt they find some laminated

and hot coated boards in

Tut’s treasure room?

I have glassed a few older(a couple years old, shaped-unglassed) shaped blanks in the past…looked great, and everything…but when a 8 foot gun floats like a 4 ft belly board …what else could it be? Herb

ps…nice talkin’ to you Woody.

Oooooh you are so right Brose !

Lam and hottie them is as good as finished ,in the sense of not wasting a good shaped blank goes.Herb
