Shapers, who's your favorite shaper?

Whether full time pro or backyard builder, who would you order a boards(s) from if you wanted another shaper to make you a new ride?  And what would you order?

My brother-in-law… Karl Toft… who taught me how to shape and glass. He’s a complete artist in every sense of the word and I admire his work.

I’d order an old school singlefin shortboard, with the fin foiled by him and glassed on. Resin tint, gloss and polish. He’s a master.

Huie

Simple!

The question was “who’s your favorite shaper”

I know a lot of shapers and Huie is the most humble and giving. Thats why!

on ya Huie!

I would love to meet bill thrailkill someday and just sit down and talk with him. As well as any old time shaper who did what we do today with just nothing but raw innovation. I also really admire Erik arakawa

I’d have to go back to Richard Price.   I’ve had a couple of magic boards from him so I’d go back.

Wouldn’t mind having an old school 8’ Brewer mini-gun.  Had one back in the 90s and got rid of of and always regretted it.

In no particular order:

Drew Bagget

Stretch

Greg Griffin

Robin Mair

Josh Dowling

Yorky

Bud

Andreini:

7’ ish dble wing pin tail.

For being a great guy, who has been willing to share a lot of time and infomation over the years, as well as having never shaped me a board that wasn’t “magic”, I’ll have to cite Dennis Murphy. His boards have always ridden like an extension for me - not too much thought, the board just goes where I want it to. When I couldn’t shape my last longboard, he’s the shaper I turned to.

Class act, great boards.

in current order

huie......he just keeps making me interesting stuff....stuff that works!

and each board...we get closer that magic one!

dahlberg.....pretty sure he used take my order and wipe his arse with it

i wanted a 6'3 swallow?

"shut up...this 6'6 round tail go better for your fat arse"

and they did!!!

tony dempsey....very good designer....i'm totally sold on his "turbo concave"

never met him....but his boards go unreal....wouldn't blink buy a stockie out the shop with his name on it

p.s  webber.....gregs made me some keepers too, love him or hate him...if his in the zone he can create perfect boards by hand...still

Its a simple answer, first and foremost  HUEI,   he could shape me anything he bloody well wanted to, I wouldnt care, he is the best, period, from shaping, glassing, making fins, sanding, polishing, nice pinline work, he is what I call a shaper and still doing it by hand

2nd,  YORKY, he is now a local lad, and his enthusiasm and willingness to share stoke is amazing, when he talks about shaping he is just like a little kid who wont grow up, I want one of his boards one day and Yorky takes pride in doing everything by hand.

Mark Pridmore once made me a real nice quad, if ever I wanted another quad I would go to mark as he blew me away with the quad he made me, if it didnt snap I would be still riding her.

Favorite might not be the best shaper.  On that note my first choice would be Pat Flecky. Pat is an old friend who is full of stock. His shaping might not be the best but he does know his way with a blank and a planer.

One that I have will be getting a board from soon is Steve Forestall.  Ever board of his that I have seen has that something about them that stands out.

Another that is no longer with us is Bill caster. my hunch is that if bill were alive today  Rusty would be working Caster.

ah guess it’s down to just lil’ol’ me

the arguing down to a minimum

so’s the tripping over my feet

while shaping mostly debris

and not each others feet.

in the words of an esteemed forbearer

“when its done ,you should be able to ride it.”

what ‘s a surfboard but sumpthin’ you made

from a thought form . If’n your thought forms

start with a close associate so be it

…ambrose…

There have been a lot of shapers that are my favorite.

To just have one is kind of hard.

Each shaper has his special gift.

I took a way something from these guys that has helped me along my way!

I’m very grateful to have learned something from them through technique or philosophy in my journey.

All of these guy’s I mention are truly gifted shapers.

Much respect to them.

Kind regards,

Gotta go with ambrose on this one…  Ha!

 A Bitchin’ board indeed Ambrose…")

Oh. Yeah.

If ever I was buying:

Russel Hoyte

Greg Griffin

in that order…

As far as pro shapers… probably Toby Pavel

I don’t have a favorite shaper. If I wanted a board Jim Phillips would be my 1st. choice. On another note I have always thought that Mike Hynson was on the cutting edge of progressive shaping back in the 60’s and 70’s. I would really like to be able to hang with him for a day and talk story while he shaped me a board. The Guy has lived an amazing life.

Hoyte has some some interesting stuff going on…

Hoyte has some interesting stuff going on…

You bet…

I like Drewtang’s work too, he’s a member here…

The small Tomo  MPH boards under  18 1/2" wide would make interesting kite boards…
