Shaping and Surfing in NYC?

Any Brooklyn/NYC surfers out there? I’d really appreciate the help! Where you surf mostly, how often you get out?

Hey Rick:

Lots of guys do it (live, surf and shape in NYC). The trek from Brooklyn out to LI or Rockaway Beach is easy, especially if you have a car. Usually 40 minutes or so. Finding affordable loft space might be a bigger challenge. There’s a guy who posts on here occasionally as marke and posts a lot here: www.nynjsurf.com who has a space in Williamsburg and is doing some really interesting hollow wood stuff as well as eps and veneer boards. Also, check here: http://www.newyorksurf.com/modules/ipboard/ for a message board with some good tips and good folks. I live in the Northern NJ suburbs, about an hour from the Jersey shore and a little more to LI. Not ideal, but it works, and I have a garage where I can do my work in peace without having to put up with paying additional rent. Anyway, best of luck

There are plenty of Brooklyn and NYC surfers…I’m not one of them, although I live in Long Island. I do know plenty who do make the commute and are usually out when ever theres swell. Also pretty good access to some decent snowboarding, alot of bus trips to VT, NH, and upstate. I surf Long beach alot and Rockaway on occasion. There are some really great breaks not far away from you. Much easier to surf then living in Philly…

I’ll be moving back to Brooklyn in a couple months. I’m leaving my house with my huge shaping space, all my surfing friends, and my car behind. Pretty nerve wracking. So I’m def into meeting some NYC shapers/surfers/sways to help keep me sane. I’m going to try and find an art studio in brooklyn to shape/glass out of. And hope to find some people who are interested as well. No more NYC shaping on rooftops. It will be legit.

I’d love to come too. I split time between Brooklyn and Santa Cruz. It would be sweet to go out for a Long Beach session too!

I’ve never shaped but I’m a NYC surfer. Lived in Manhattan, now live 30 miles north of the city and I’m moving to LB in March.

Let me know when and I’ll meet up with you guys. Maybe you’ll inspire me to finally shape my own board then send it to Brian Wynn for glassing.

So I’m finally moving in two days. Found a place in Carroll Gardens. I’ll be bringing my shaping room with me and just keeping it in a pile in my apartment. Hope to find space in Red Hook ASAP. Anyone interested in sharing space? I have legit stands, lights, and every tools imaginable. Been having trouble finding a space I can afford on my own.

I CAN’T BELEIVE I DIDNT SEE THIS THREAD. Anyway I live in NYC. I shape in Rockaway beach. I’m one of the only 3 that shape here. I also have a place in the Manhatten and Brooklyn not too far from Carrol Gardens and Redhook…As a matter of fact I was in Carrol Gardens and RedHook the other day. Count me in too!!

i just moved here and am wondering if anybody knows of where i could buy a used/cheap fish, egg etc… or anthing with some foam, in the nyc area?
