shaping at home professionally

Hello world. hope all is well.

I’d love to here peoples thoughts on hand shaping boards at home professionally. Is it allowed if all noise and dust is contained?

I was told a while back that shaping is considered and “art form” like sculpting clay or something, and you were allowed. This subject runs deep with me at present.

Has anyone gone to a council in Australia and asked for permission, or had any problems on the subject at all??

Thanks… i’m new here and love all the diverse (not you dave) boards and stories you all share. cheers.

What’s wrong with shaping at home unprofessionally? Just keep it to yourself (dust and all) and you should be fine. As for me, I like to share the joy of shaping by making sure the entire neighbourhood knows what I’m up to. Noise and all.

well i have been shaping 12 - 15 a week for the last year and the f–ing council come knocking and tells me they have complaints and i have to go… i spent 5 k sound proofing and dust control… yep i know who it is that complained too, i grew up here!. 1 neighbor

r that is Hated, not only by me mind you. bought the house next to my family home where i shaped my first board 17 years ago now. perfect. i’ve three kids, one boy 5 weeks old that i can watch grow up from home, then this… mate im pissed!!!

is that your mama dodo??

Are you shaping during regular (work) hours? All sounds a bit suss to me. Can’t see how the council has a leg to stand on unless your shaping at 3’oclock in the morning. Try Google searching for legal advice. Should cost the price of an internet connection.

oh sorry bobo!

as i said sound proof … no sound. thanks for advice

are you guys taikin to yourselves again?

Sorry to hear that Yorky,

How about looking for a place closer to the beach away from the neighbor?

hey my name is Dave?? Whats up with that?

Hey Yorky…

I remember spraying some of your shapes at Local Motion in the Nineties…I take it you got better! (Attempt at cheek…)

If you have good insulation, nobody need complain…

Its the resin fumes that would see you becoming a 60 minutes news item, skiving off with a bag over your head while irate neighbours throw dogshit.

Will you be going back to Cleghorne for Lam?

Josh

Yorky, go to your council and they have a list of things that you can do and cant do in /on residential zoned land. Its all about pollution and disturbing the neighbourhood amentities. In Sydney there are laws controlling things like compulsory display of a business sign but the sign has to be < 1sqm, noise limits apply as well as parking limits, hours of trade, visual pollution from storage of raw and waste materials, times of collection and delivery of raw/waste materials, controlled display of items for sale, firefighting requirements, lighting restrictions,dust/noise/noxious gases/ flamable/carcinogenic fumes, licencing requirements, customer insurance…

They know you dont necessarily need all of that but because they are such tight-arses you will have to show that you have addressed all of the requirements because its all about doing it legally.

If no-one said anything it could go on forever but the moment a snitch dobs you in then the council has a clear cut, iron-clad “duty of care” to ensure the safety and amenities of the area or else they become legally liable if they dont.

If its all too much you could try squishing shit into your neighbours cars air intake just under the windscreen.

Let me know how that works out for you, thanks.

SF.

Yes,

Yorky, you probably should attempt to do it by the book…

A commercial enterprise is different to a guy just having a bit of fun in the Garage.

Take a handful of foam dust toss it up and flick your bic to find out how almost exsplosive it is in flamability.

Your residentially located room is a bomb ready to go off and endangers your neighbors and your own.

Make shure your light switches and plugs never arc

I had the same problem a couple of years ago… Let it go quiet for a week or two then back into it when the neighbor was out . No prblem. If the council come around agree with everything they say play dumb and carry on.

Good to see you’re still around Pandanus!!!

Great advise as usual :-))

Just be careful if you’re renting as the council can/will contact the owners and you might be in breach of your lease.

Also check your house and contents insurance policies, somewhere in the fine print there’s something that will mention something about hazardous materials, amounts of things that can be stored on site, eg 20 litres of petrol only…

Switch to epoxy…

Just saw this…sounds like you’re in Oz…your neighbor should know better, after all, weren’t all you guys convicts and lawbreakers shipped over from England in the first place? Where the hell is his sense of history and culture? Moron!

I suggest you take a 70’s Nothshore approach and find a big ass Moke, er, Aborigini and pay him a quid or whatever you guys use, to go put the fear of God into him. Have your ‘negotiator’ take one of those cricket bats with him and give him a couple Fosters before he goes over. I find the more bloodshot his eyes are, the better. Make sure the bloke understands that the civies won’t help him if he keeps getty pissy. If he continues making a mess, get a few backup guys and put him on a plane to Tasmania or Antarctica (give him a choice just to be nice).

Cheers

Far to subtle.

speedy well i’d like to think that i’ve got a bit better!

Just got off the phone with the Local Motion boys (Cleghorn), its No problem to rent a bay from them, witch is kind of good cause i’ve been missing all the factory crap anyway. Its only 5 min away and there’s a good bunch of friends there that are mad, so should fun… well, when I look back on it one day maybe!

Dave. i used the word before “Diverse” before, and it wasn’t a plug for Ferral Dave’s Label… cause god knows, Dave does that enough

I’d be pushing shit up hill if I were to go ask for permission from our be loved council. might just cut em out at home and go make a mess else where… might get more done also.

good point with the insurance Hicksy.

Sunsetpoint. you make me nervous, i’d better call an electrician

asap.

Deadshaper. you should know, no one drinks Fosters! you tasted it? The Australian beer, yeah right!

Fosters, Like sex in a canoe…

Scary aboriginals, that had me laughing…

Yorky,

Say hi to Mad Mick and Uncle Brian for me… the old man hated me after I left, coz I left 'em in the lurch, but I’m sure he would come around if I were looking at him.

I’m glad to hear they’re still around, and I hope you fall into a good scene there. I’m a Goldy burn-out myself, and gratefully calling Bells home again…
