Great post Mr. Tate. Thanks Heaps. Fun to watch an artist at work.

Woa

I’ve seen some Skil’s with the blades so far out adjustment you could start those channel cuts without tipping it!  Seriously though, angling the base is an important technique to learn for cutting things like noserider concaves and such, and you have to coordinate the depth control with the tipping angle.  Practice on a junk blank, learning this will also improve rail banding technique since that’s really tipping the base also.    Also on that video, notice the cut is started with the shoe first on the blank and the cut depth preset.  Only the shoe is on the blank when you start and cut begins right at the edge. Like planing a door.  This is the same way to cut V in tails.  With either V or channels, the important thing to learn is fading out the cuts so you don’t have a lot of sanding later to blend the surfaces.  Practice in super slow motion, go through the pass first with the trigger off to get the feel for fading out the cut and the lever positions along the path.  Really the key to fading in or out of a cut is how you adjust the blades, they have to be set so that there’s absolutely no cut at zero on the lever.  You may lose 1/64th off the max depth, but the fades will be more precise and you’ll notice this immediately on rail bands.

Thanks Pete. A clinic.

Pete - I have you to thank for being able to watch Terry do this on countless occasions. Effortless nose concave for sure… I’m not there yet, but someday… Hopefully.

Thank you Greg and WideAwake, where else but Swaylocks could we discuss such topics; it’s like we’re hanging out in a shaping bay somewhere.    Big difference is that we don’t have to blow ourselves clean when we leave or talk through a dust mask.

Some killer shit!

“Positive though and planning”

Execution of same is the trick.

Remember the masters….

i guess this works better than using some angle guide approach right?

…now to see see it glassed…
