Shaping Injuries: Learning From Mistakes

I recently got a couple stiches in my thumb when I was being stupid and removing a tapeline that had hardened using a chisel.  Working with sharp tools and machines, there is always the possibility of injury.  Besides injuries like tendonitis and arthritis, I was wondering if others would share their times when things went wrong and lessons to be learned in safety.

What was a shaping injury of yours?  And how can it have been prevented?

Lesson: I stabbed myself by doing something obviously wrong and made it worse by not using proper safety equipment like work gloves.  ALSO CHISEL AWAY FROM THE BODY, NOT TOWARDS LIKE MY DUMBASS.

always hold your single edge razor blades by the dull side.   Yes.

always hold your single edge razor blades by the dull side.   Yes.

Focusing on cutting a lap line I was dumbfounded on why the brand new single edge razor wasn’t cutting until I saw red drops messing up the foam.  Did a red pin line.

No real injuries but one real close call when I sharpened my planer blades once and didn’t tighten one of them enough.  Planer frame and blade exploded in my hands on about the fifth pass down the blank/.  sent shrapnel clear through the blank.

Planed my index finger hanging my Skil on the ceiling hook while it was still spinning. Only hurt for a little while, and chicks dig scars.

Maybe this is why the left rail feels fuller.

Exploding green Chinese planer.

cleaning tacky lam resin globs from a grinding wheel with a (short) rubber block. hand slipped and ground off a good portion of the fingernail on my thumb. eeeewwwww

lesson - when the block gets short, time for a new one!

Is that your hand?

Lesson: Buy quality tools?

well, I’ve got about 20,000 boards out of my Hitachi’s, none have ever exploded, it is ALWAYS operator error, Claude Codgen had his Skil throw a blade, he forgot to put the retainer screw back in, same with Steve Clark, they don’t work well without all the pieces

Hit my big toe with 80 grit on a med pad last week at full speed. Hit bone.

Just to get this thread on track, how about those who share their experiences also include some advice to not repeat the same mistake.  It may be obvious like wear closed shoes or use gloves but it might help somebody and prevent the same outcome.

I feel the pain of each entry.  Be safe and thanks for sharing.

I am always very amazed at the number of shapers who work shoeless and the amount of people who show up at the factory barefoot and want to wander around where razor blades are stuck to the floors

Absolutely!!!  Been there and done that with a single edge razor blade.  Cutting a lap with the Bach side of the blade, my finger on the sharp edge and pressing down.  Can anyone say “blood” brother.  Also (and I wouldn’t tell anyone I was this stupid for a long time);  laid my Skil on the shelf above the light on its side, turn to grab a sanding block and drug my finger tip across the still spinning cutter head blade.  Almost took the tip of my finger off.  Otherwise;  minor $#|+.  Lowel. PS –  took quite awhile for those two minahs to heal.  Burned like hell when I got Acetone in the cut too.

thats one good thing about the cold over here i guess

My accident was pure stupidity on my behalf. Ill never wear thongs while using power tools again.

By lesson learned is to never do the above posted again.  Lowel

“Unrestrained Moderation”…classic! Words to live by.

Fins out - im interested to hear how your choice in underwear led to bodily harm. Mental I get, but physical?..

I guess I’m a safety guy…no crazy stories. Still use all 10 fingers and all toes. Shoes a must…

My ears are gone… Constant ringing for at least 10 years… Young people please use ear plugs…you won’t listen to me now and you won’t hear me later…Hearing loss is real…it does not come back…

I’m that guy, the normal looking guy that can’t hear so well…loud talker… Wear ear plugs…Wear ear plugs!

Stingray.

Hahahaha I was waiting for this comment. Here in Australia thongs are what you call flip flops. Im sure you know this. But someone had to say it hahaha
