I recently began wanting to shape a nice longboard for myself to ride on those nice laidback days. I have been doing some research on longboard aspects as to the rails, rocker, as well as concave bottoms. I have little knoweldge on the subject, but everyday as i research farther in I am gaining more information. Once I start the board, I am thinking of having a 9’4" board with 50/50 rails. As of now, thats the inormation and knoweldge i pretty much have on longboards. If anyone out there can lend me some info and guildlines that would pretty awesome. And if anoyone has questions for me that would be sick.
Thanks everyone,

Shape depends a lot on the wave you want to ride. For short, dumpy, (North) NJ beachbreaks, if you’re not an experienced longboarder, you might want a more “performance” oriented longboard, with bit more rocker overall, and not too flat in the entry… about 23" wide. Bottom can be flat to vee or double concaved vee… nose concave or not.
For a more traditional board, you need a slower, longer (South Jersey) wave. Then you can go with a flatter rocker, particularly in the entry, but with more tail kick, rolled bottom, nose concave, and big, thick fin.
Ha, that's about where I started when I did my first (and so far only) longboard! I "rolled" the rails up a little from the bottom, to pinch them a little. Kept them round right out the back, looks like a folded tortilla in the (square) tail. Maybe 60/40 in the back half. No concave or anything, but added V out the tail, starting at about 20" up. Kept the nose and tail pretty thin, most the meat is in the middle. I really like the board, its perfect for smaller days up to 4 or 5 foot.
Well some of the things i wanted to know were to as like width of the nose and tail, tail shapes, width, thickness. Like if any are more appropriate for beachbreaks. I already have the concept of the 50/50 rails since im not planning on doing too many techinical meneuvers on the board. I already have a longboard, a Robert August, but i wanted to make my own and to hopefully give the RA to my brother.
