Hello all, Im mapping out my next board and need a little help from the kind and wise. Its going to be another noserider… The guy its for is 5’10 and 175 ish. Im thinking 9’3 - 9’6 . I will give as much info as I can about this shape and hopefully with your help , get a solid plan.
The blank I have is a US 9’8 Y , natural rocker. The template I am using is a spin template. Im thinking 3 1/4, 23 wide , 8 3’8 tail, 9 nose. Blended nose concave into a fairly mellow rolled vee bottom all the way off the tail. Single fin box 6" up. Rails would be egg shaped and 60 - 40 like my last board. Rocker im thinking 3 3/4 T, 3 1/2 N, if I can get it out of this blank…
So, my main question would be about rocker. Looking at the foil/rocker of this blank it looks to me like if I turned it round so the nose was the tail it would be closer to what I need? But, it would seem there is a reason the rocker is the way it is in the first place. ie, if i flip it round the rocker would not work? What would YOU do with this blank if you were trying to get this shape? Would you leave the blank the right way round? Is it necessary to have more tail rocker than nose? If anybody can help me with some rocker numbers for this board I would be eternally grateful! As allways many thanks for any information anyone out there can give me. This website continues to be an indispensable resource for a novice such as myself…
that’s a good thought you had. It’s been done before! search (using the little magnifying glass at the top of the screen) “reverse rocker” and read the threads that come up…
i like the 9’8Y I typically get it glued up with -1" or -1.5" nose rocker
here is a 9’6 i just made with a 9’8Y
with the stock rocker you may be able to get what you want if you only take excess off the nose and dont add any rocker during foiling and might have to ‘gut’ the blank a little bit…
Shaped quite a few Noseriders out of that blank using stock rocker. Only thing I did was flip the tail the six inches behind the fin and Concave the nose. That blank is based on the old Clark 9’8 S ( Stewart) and the 9’9 Yater. The US version is thicker and not as flipped in the nose as the original Stewart shaped plug. I a tuallu liked the Clark version better and still have 3 or 4 stashed. Makes a very nice progressive Noserider in the 9’4 or 9’6 range. You really don’t need to do anything special to that blank to net a nice tip rider. Lowel
I like to stick with stock blanks (natrural rocker). Not because I don’t like custom… But 3 years from now that guy wants a new board and my notes are not so good…and 7/16 of custom rocker are moot on a backyard built longboard…I like more tail rocker… …
Currently shaping a 10-1 for a friend…his Honda got stolen…with a Stingray board inside. Guy says “I loved that board. Make me a board just like that one”…Yeah… it was a one off custom made from a 10-1Y…
thanks for the kind words john - here are some pics of it being ridden
stingray i would like to think that the extra care to getting the right curve matters but who knows… i typically will not do copies - all of mine are unique!
