How wide & how deep is optamal for the space between the up-rites?? The slot were you put the blank on it’s rail. I built some with a 5" w 8" d space then lined it with 1/2 high density foam rubber. It works for me, but some people I talk to think they are to narrow. Any comments along with the reason why wider is better.
Ray: Mine are 5 3/4" W., I need them to be wide enough to put the board in at 45 degrees to turn the rails. All depends on what works for you though, you need enough padding not to damage the blank as you get down to finishing it. I’m ready to upgrade to something adjustable that I can make or weld myself and would like to hear about what others have come up with. I’ve seen some simple but creative solutions from this group and I bet there are some good ideas for shaping racks out there. Just about the perfect width is a 4x6 (5 1/2"). 4x4’s butted to the 4x6 make an excellent and inexpesive rack. It was all I used for years, until I moved into a pre made shaping lab with racks in place.
