Having some trouble… I am using two 4 foot/ 2 bulb fixtures overhead in my 8 by 16 shaping room. Bulbs are 40w, but not sure if cool-white,daylight, or whatevers. Problem is that under the lights it seems too bright. I’m having trouble seeing flaws, etc. Blank will look good under the lights, but in natural light I can see promlems.
Example: Currently I’ve got an EPS blank that I did a pretty sloppy spackling job on the bottom. Trying to sand it smooth but I’ve got “splotches” of spackling in some areas. Willing to sand back to foam everywhere but it is frustrating when at night with the lights (and with Miller Lite) the board looks good, smooth etc. then the next day with sunlight I see problems.
Mainly wondering if any of you guys feel too much light can be a problem. And if so, what to do? Thanks…
Go back to square one. You do not use overhead lights when shaping, Do a search on this site and take a look at some shaping room set-ups. You will see that side lights usually set at a height of 4-6 inches above your blank as it sits on your shaping rack is the one thing they all have in common. If too much light wasn’t a problem we’d all be shaping under Banyan trees. As for spackling EPS; it sounds as though you are not mixing spackle at the proper consistency or not doing a good job of spreading it. Always let it dry completly. I recomend screening it not sandpaper. I also recomend fine Mexican cervesa rather than stinky Miller pi$$ water.
the only time I use my overhead lights is, a blank with a bad glueball problem, where every stroke of my sanding block scratches the crap out of the foam, I turn on the top lights, turn off the side lights and flip the blank on a rail for the fine sand, the glueballs fall off, rather than roll around under the sanding block
Well how about that… Didn’t realize to not have the overheads on while shaping. I moved my sidelights up (they were too low) and left the overhead lights off. Wow, what a difference. Can definitely see much more without the board being “washed out/ too bright and white”. Thanks.
As for the Miller Lite, it’s what my neighbor/buddy always has. Any beer is fine with me as long as it’s a cold beer!
