shaping room wall color

Most of the viideos I watch have shaping rooms painted blue. Is there a particular reason for that? Im putting the finishing touches on my first shaping room and want to know if its necisary for me to paint or If I can leave it white.

Thanks

If you go to Surfline and do some digging around there is an old segment called shapers bay.  There should be 8 or 10 different pro shapers represented.  I must have analyzed that thing for a month before I made my bay.  So many little tricks and styles of setting up your bay.  I really liked the split color style, dark contrast color below eye level and a much brighter color above to help break up the stuck in a dark hole feeling.

First shaping bay.

Same color as trees minus the bugs and gecko crap.

…is not so good to have Blue on the front and back walls; other colors are better.

I think a good combo is Blue on the sides to project the lights without the Black eating its; Black on the front and back walls for best contrast but you still have plenty of light due to the Blue color, and White ceiling for better light projection (better to have a light on the ceiling)

Gray is a great color. Totally neutral. US Navy uses it for a reason.Very easy on the eyes.I wish they had gray foam. I have been doing Gray opaque color jobs on boards lately.

pridmore,

go with a mid-dark green.

most of the chalk boards in school(in my days, before the dinosaurs) were this color green, not black.

just about to do my new creative cave so good timing…pretty sure I am running with black, it is a very high celing so dont think it’ll feel small…gunna use blackboard paint so I can do sketches and stuff when discussing with customers… but dont like the black causing depression comments, time will tell I guess…

Thanks Ace. Once a Pro always a Pro.

Thanks Barry. This pic helps a ton.

Thanks Herb. I’ll avoid the depressing black.

I have worked in many colored shaping rooms. When I worked ai Linden’s, the rooms were a light blue from 4’up and a dark blue on the bottom. Black is a good contrast, but is too gloomy for me. I’ve had several green rooms too. Ever since my buddy who was a sound tech for the House of Blues turned me on to sound-board,  I’ve stuck with the tan color it comes as. It has plenty of contrast for me.I do like a light color on the ceiling. It makes it not feel like a cave.

Barry

Cool. Thank you.

Thanks Bud. This helps.

We have 2 shaping rooms in our shop… “Shaping Room Blue” and Black. The shapers who rent the rooms picked the colors. Personally I like the black room better. It absorbs everything only downfall is it feels a lot smaller.

ace,

green is a great color !

it been proven that the color green is psychologically benefical.

black is killer for sighting ,but the down side is : long term black room causes depression.

blue is good ++ very netural.

myself...........too much junk in the way to make much of a difference in wall colors............i just make sure i have a plain wall to view the board,,,,,,, lengthwise.............

lighting(getting the lighting correct) is the most important thing..............if you lighting is off............so is your shaping.

remember...............concentrate on the blank .............not the walls.

I have had Green rooms. Reminded me too much of my first wife. Her favorite color was green. I have had blue rooms. Nice. Last couple rooms I put up brown sound board and left it brown. Works good and keeps the sound under control.  You just need to see the shadows. White will make that harder to do.

Blanks are usually white, if the background is a contrast it is much easier/accurate to see how it looks when eyeing your shape. Dark shaping room is all about contrasts and side lights set up to throw shadows that show bumps dips imperfections… or lack thereof
