Here are some parts of my backyard that have potential for a shaping room. Home Depot is a mile from my house and I’m thinking about using tarp. I’ve read other articles in the forum about making a shack but I’m wondering what ideas you guys would have looking at the pictures?
I’m not very creative but I’m thinking about throwing in poles or something in the soil and then putting a giant tarp over everything…
The last one I built, I made a platform of 2x6s and decked it with 5/8 ply. Corner posts were 2x4, crossed braced with strapping (3/4 x 2-1/2). I did 2x4 rafters, also cross braced from below with strapping and then use tarps for the roof and three walls. One end was hung with plastic in two parts that overlapped at the center to make an entrance. I built it in between some small trees and braced the whole thing by strapping it to tree trunks.
Last time I built a board, I did it in between my house & our side fence (kind of like your pic # 2). I used some drywall screws & my makita to temporarily fasten a couple of those cheap blue tarps (the kind that you get at the flea market) to my eaves and the side fence. It kept the wind out, and I was able to set it up & take it down in about 15 minute, allowing me to shape for about an hour or two at a time - (which I did when no one was home to bug me!) Got the job done fine, didn’t cost anything, and an added benefit was the nice blue light I got in there from the tarps.
To combat wind- If I use a canopy, I’ll probably use cement weights to keep the tarp down. But I’m glad I posted that picture of that house-side fence part since I did think about what you are talking about. Now that I think about it, it would be the best temporary and cheap way. So maybe I’ll try that for now and then upgrade if I really fall in love with shaping. Thank you!
