shaping

what kind of planer do you need to use to shape board. I have a planer that uses sand paper and im not sure if it work or not i just want to find out before i spend money for a hitachi> Thanks

You dont need a planer to shape a board; its just quicker. All planers basically do the same thing; you can buy a cheap ryobi and it will still cut foam which is what you want. people like the skil and hitach because of easy modification and things like quick changing depth control, and shop vac attachments. Hope this helps

…if it s a planer do not use sandpaper, have blades

I dont think you have a planer if it needs sandpaper. a planer uses a rotating blade, you can change the distance the blade extends beyond the flat bottom surface for a deeper or shallower cut. belt sanders use a loop of sandpaper, and hand sanders use a sheet/patch of sand paper and vibrate in small circular motions.

planers definitely make it quicker, but im not very experienced with it yet so i use the hand planer and sanding blocks…

If it has sand paper, it is not a planer.  If it is a belt sander, you can probably remove enough material with it to shape - if it is an orbital sander, there is no way you can remove enough material to shape.

I suggest getting a surform - small hand planer and then use the sander to smooth out the lines it makes…

yeah it’s a belt sander so it can be used to shape?

I use a belt sander making wood boards - but I wouldn't use one on foam.  If you're starting out shaping, hand tools are a good place to start.

What kind of blanks / materials are you using?  Are you starting with a block of foam, or a regular blank?  A little more background info would be helpful.

There's lots of guys here experienced in using all kinds of tools for shaping, but I don't think I've ever heard of anyone using a beltsander on foam.

BTW, are you aware that there are kits and videos to get you off to a good start on shaping?  I have found that you will get a lot of help here, especially if you post pictures and descriptions of your projects.

Welcome to Swaylocks.

You can shape a board without a planer, but you're going to be limited on foiling and/or thickness reduction. Basically you'll be cutting an outline on a blank and putting some rail shape on it. Read the FAQ thread at the top and study the links there, lots of good info there on taking it a little further...

Unless you're super-skilled with a belt sander I wouldn't advise touching foam with it.

a blank from foam ez I think it’s pu foam and I was just wondering if it would work before I went and baught a hitatchi or something btw what kind of resin do you use epoxy or fiberglass or something else?

on a PU blank you can use epoxy or Polyester Resin; Fiberglass what you ass resin to for strength

Ass resin?  Usually brown and lumpy.

I meant to say add but typo sorry. But a better choice of wording would be apply resin to
