This video appeared on the local news a couple of days ago of a guy flying his drone last saturday & catching a shark cruising near a surfer. Interesting how the shark stayed a certain distance from him & after the surfer caught the wave it turned & went in his direction towards shore. Was it tracking the surfer or was it just coincidence?
I’ve surfed & kitesurfed that location many times. Seen plenty of dolphins, but never a shark. A friend of mine has seen the shark a couple of times in the last 3 months. Once near the Pismo Pier (about 1 mile north of where this was filmed).
Drones are a good way to keep an eye on things out at the sharky spots. We are probably learning that our spots are sharkier than we thought, too. Mike
Agreed on all counts. Just never thought about it there at that spot.
As a follow-up to the drone issue. I’ve also been told that the drone operator may be getting in some trouble as there is a very small airport ( just small private airplanes) less than a half mile away… Apparently the FAA is not too happy. I agree that drones would be a cheap effective method of “watching for whitey”, but with all the bad press about them near airports & getting in the way of the air tankers trying to put out the fires in nocal may lead to regulations making them hard to get & operate… I even saw one news report that the feds are now worried that terrorists may try to use one in a domestic attack.
Yah. Pretty cheap and easy to use based on a conversation and demonstration from a friend. I admit I think about knocking one out of the sky with a 12 gauge. Would be fun. Look out for those spinning little propellars, tho. mike
Have to train up a new bird. Watched a guy hunt rabbits in huge field in Marina del Rey (SoCal) once long time ago, early morning from window of parents condo. Some sort of hawk and a dog. Dog ran out and chased out a rabbit then the bird zoomed over and took it. All of about 10 minutes for them to get two and then he left, most likely to cook them up for breakfast. What really struck me was how efficient it was.
