Shaun Tomson 7' - is it worth restoring?

This board was picked up from the street verge so the previous owner didn’t think much of it.

There is no shaper’s name on it - just a number (938) and the length (7’). It is 21" wide.

I was considering stripping it back to foam and re-shaping but would this be sacrilige? Who knows how old it is?

It is pretty dinged up with bodgy patch jobs, some de-lam and the nose is a mess.

What do you think - is it worth restoring?

Unusual piggish shape… Yes, worth restoring IMHO, as it’s not in a very bad shape anyway. Might be fun to ride, too. Again, not the kind of board you tend to think of when talking about Shaun Thompson. Makes it even more interesting.

Fix it and ride it.  Do not strip it and reshape it.

I’m with mako. Fix it and use it. It is not so trashed that it needs to be stripped. Looks like all three original fins are intact. Why get carried away?

As to the age…early to mid 1980s would be my guess.

And I'll chime in with the choir.

Fix it, it doesn't look like that difficult a job. And there is certainly enough information here to do all of it.

7'x21" is a kinda useful size, the shape itself doesn't look that bad, who knows why it got thrown out? Domestic dispute, jail time, you name it - doesn't mean it's a bad board. Just means somebody didn't want it around.

Strip-reshapes turn out badly most of the time. On the other hand, throw a little money and time at it, don't do anything crazy like cutting or routing out stuff, you'll have a perfectly good  board. For cheap money.

hope that's of use

doc...

Yeah it will probably be worth something in 20 years. May be worth sealing up and storing in the attic, then spending $$ for a restore when

the time is right. Shauns cousin Michael opened a surfshop in the early 80’s in Marina Del Rey and sold these boards for a couple of years or less before he shut down.

I forget the name of the shop…it may have been Instinct…I dunno.

Shaun lived in Malibu Colony and surfed throughout L.A. during this time.

You dont state where your located so it may be from that shop if your nearby

Otherwise, these boards probably were well represented throughout the U.S. in surf shops at the time.

This will be worth money in the future, aside from Kelly Slater, Shaun is a ‘Duke Khanamoku of surfing’ from a media standpoint

and this will be more apparent as he ages.

The media lies. That is an insult to the Duke’s memory.

There is only one “Duke Kahanamoku of surfing”. Always will be.

Aloha Trimmer and Otis.

Shaun opened a shop called “Surf Beat” on Wilshire Blvd. in Santa Monica.  Shaun’s brother Paul managed the operations.  I made a few boards for the shop but all of my boards also have my logo on them.  The board you have Trimmer is not one of mine nor do I have any knowledge of it.

I sent the link to this thread on to Shaun so maybe he will respond with the appropriate info you need.

Hi Trimmer,

Any board is worth restoring if you are going to ride it and not just hang it. Not sure when or where the board was made but it looks early 80’s - wide tail looks fun - got a bit of the old Velzy pig influence - definitely different to anything else on the beach. I’d like to have a wave on it if you fix it - shauntomson@yahoo.com Where did you find it? Enjoy the ride!

Well how cool is all  that!

Swaylocks has another surprise!

from my earlier post : Marina Del Rey , must have been a Gotcha Surf Shop

That shop later became Island surfboards and is now Santa Monica surfboards.

Thanks for the replies - cool to get one from the man himself.

A restore job it is although I must admit I hate trying to match colours - that green could be a challenge!

I am in Perth, West Oz so if you are ever over here Shaun you would be more than welcome to take it for a spin.

My son spoke to the guy who ditched the board. He said he bought it over from Europe (somewhere?) years ago. Might have to try and can get some more info from him.

Instinct was a clothing brand started by Shaun and ErnieTompson in 1979, so the “stinky” (as it was colloquially known) logos were probably some co-branding thing. Instinct relaunched in 2007. The backhand surfer was Shaun’s logo/TM.
