I just received a request to ship an 8’0" gun to Texas from Ventura, Calif. Any idea what this would cost including packing? Brent http://www.2ndWaveSurfboards.com

lmao…i’m from ventura and i don’t even need an 8’ gun.

If it’s not going to one of a couple of well known collections then my guess is a S.Hemi season run to Mexico. Ship with a freight trucking company. Depending on the value of the board ship in a padded blank box from Clark or a recycled box from a surf shop. Bubble wrap is pretty cheap padding. You will have to call around to different freight carriers for best point to point price, they have a standard price based on 100# units with a factor for volume. Expect a $75.00- $125.00 price for a board shipped this way. Most will pickup at your place for this, if you deliver to them it might be cheaper. If you are ever going to ship anything over 130 inches in length and girth the best way to go is with a national LTL carrier. If it is under 130 inches in length and girth then the small package companies are another option. The important element in your shipping process is the proper packaging of your stick. The small package carriers have a standard that includes a minimum of two(2) inches of packing material on every side. The edges (nose, rails & tails) have a tendency to work towards the closest box wall so it is a good idea to suspend the board within the exterior box with a forgiving yet sturdy material. The discussion on discarded boogie boards make an excellent point in that this type of foam is the perfect packaging material for nose, rail and tail protection. If you want to ensure satisfaction with your Texas request, construct your packaging in such a way that a three foot dead drop will not cause any damage to the item being shipped. The second element that you cannot skimp on is shipping insurance. Pay for it. The transportation companies in the US traditionally pay only the “Cost-to-Replace” this translates to wholesale – not retail – cost. They will typically ask for some form of proof (wholesale invoice) to acertain actual cost. The charge that the LTL company will quote you may change due to additional charges that they love to impact their profit margin with. The most common charge is the “additional delivery attempt” charge. This happens when the planned consignee (guy in Texas) is not available to receive the shipment. The reason the best choice is with a national carrier is because they will not “interline” which means that they typically will control the entire shipment as opposed to giving the shipment to one or more additional carriers to make it cross country. When you have a shipment that gets interlined then the chances of the shipment getting damaged increases exponentionally. Hope this info helps. Magoo
