I’ve only ever surfed shortboards but I’m considering making a hybrid shape as a kind of into to longboarding, I don’t want to go real long (I’d have to grow a moustache and get a 4 wheel drive) but I’m interested in see what its like to surf something bigger. Attached is the board I think would be an intermediate step but I’m not sure about the rocker - I’ve gone flat upfront with moderate tail rocker is this the right approach?
Forgot to add, I’m 65 kgs.
looks nice bui i don’t think it will give you any sort of longboard feel, it will just feel like a big pig shortboard… grow the mustach…
… grow the mustach…
…And a BIG beergut .
And wear short arm short leg wetsuits , with fluoro webbed gloves on your hands , and camel toe booties on ya feet . And a helmet .
THEN , you can fit right in …in Perth . [as long as you can’t surf well]
no offense here but…
shortboards: 5.5 to 7 feet
midboards: 7 to 8.5 feet
longboards: 8.5 feet + (many dont consider anything under 9 a longboard)
a 6’10 is still a shortboard regardless of shape…imo, an 8ft mal is where i would go if i were in your shoes
Yeah true that. Its just not long unless you have at least 8.5ft of foam
I really don’t know what the transition into longboarding would really include. If you can surf a short board “thruster?” then you should have no issues with a preformance Lb. If your talking about going from a thruster to a trad. single log then you would have to adapt to the turning.
For the most part, guys blow me out of the water if I’m wrong, but moving up into a Lb doesn’t have to be a slow learning curve like if you were going from long to very short.
If you don’t want to make that big jump in to longboarding make a 8’ish egg. Something inbetween, but then you won’t get the true performance of either type of board.
Just get a 9’6"+ longboard single Lb and learn to surf all over again.
Howzit pinhead, I'd go for a fungun shape which is not as wide as a longboard and the nose and tail are narrower, Some where's in the 8' to 8'6' range. Quite a few guys ride them at Hanalei when it gets in the 6' to 8' size.Aloha,Kokua
i must agree with those who say that your stated project would not yield the actual experience of a long board. only that of a longer short board. concerning the current project, to aproximate any thing near a longboard feel, you’d want to drop the rocker and make the nose wider.
minimally, i’d go to 7’ or a bit longer for a mini longboard, keeping the thruster fin set up and a wider nose with lower rocker, and a concave in the nose, soft down ralis all around. if clark blanks are available to you, i’d suggest the 7’3" BECKER blank. in fact, i have such a beastie in the garage which i made several years ago and if you’d like basic dimensions i can go tape 'em for you. no pics/no camera, sorry bout that.
a transition is not a bad idea. there’s quite a bit of difference between traditional longboarding and riding the modern thruster. so maybe you can go thru, in reverse, what many went thru in the late 60’s - early 70’s.
short cut would be: a modern lightweight hi performance board maybe 8 - 9 foot long with hard to soft down rails and a 2 + 1 fin set up.
Thanks eveyone,
OK so I should go longer - this one is 7’2’’ , still not sure about the rocker or width though.
