I’ve been thinking about shaping a new board for my quiver, and I’m interested in something full figured and around 7 ft. I’m looking for lots of float…probably go a little thick. I typically ride longboards, and am looking to mimic a longboard shape in a smaller board. I know there’ve been a few offerings in this category by various companies lately. I’m thinking rounded pintail, single fin…something I can pull a cheater five with. Maybe similar to a Cooperfish Comet?
I’m 6ft 195lb, and ease of paddle is important to me in this board. Any of you who have experimented with this kind of shape, I welcome your input on dimensions, rocker, rails, thickness, etc.
i am making a 7’5" comet shape right now. It is 18"N 23"W 151/4" T and 3" thick. I added concave in the nose to help witht he cheater 5’s flat throught the middle and belly in the tail and I am gonna put one of Halcyon’s flex fins on there if he ever finishes it. It looks like a really fun board can’t wait to see how it works, just need the fin.
just shaped and painted this. it is headed to the glasser tomorrow. it’s a 7-2" longboard shape with single concave to double concave bottom. the fin set up will be 2+1. this board is by no means a log. it’s 2-3/8" thick and 21’ wide, high performance speed demon
go to the walden website. i think it is waldensurfboards.com They have exactly what you are looking for, but maybe a little shorter. its a replica of their longboards but much shorter. the thing looks amazing.
thanks guys…the spray was super easy. I cut out the flower shape on contact paper then placed on the foam/ sprayed some orange then pealed the contact paper off then sparyed some more orange over the whole thing. I can’t wait to ride this thing…I was just at Sugarmill Glassing and they cant get to it for 4 weeks they just got in big order of Rusty and Channel Is. Here a pic of another board ( a 6’-9") I did at the same time, it has the same front half as the other one.
Shipman that’s awesome… and so simple. And who cares if your template pops up a bit and you get a bit of underspray… could probably make some more durable templates out of cardboard or some rubber or something if you do a lot of sprays.
Shipman- My compliments on the airbrush also! Ideas like that are why I come to Swaylocks! Thanks alot for showing/telling us about it! The shapes look awsome also! -Carl
SugarMill is located in Oceanside. in the valley near the airport. I don’t have their addess or phone number handy. they do a great job and the prices are good. Uncle Mike of UM surfboards is the owner.
WOW! That is a beautiful finish- why bother with cloth inlays?
I have 2 questions:
What blank did you use for that?
and
Long Islanders… Although I love glassing… are there any glassers on LI and what do they typically charge. I have heard about Squeek doing it but does he only glass for friends like the Fawesses?
here’s mine. i went to eletic here in HB and had them shape me my 6’6" “noserider” (obviously not to be taken too literally). i’m 6’3" and 215 and i love the thing. paddles like mad and with the 9" fin in it i have surfed waves a few feet over head. i have never surfed a single fin before this board, and everyday i am figuring out new things that make this board work better. there is a bit of rocker in the front and hardly any at all in the tail. overall dimensions are: 6’6"-22"-3".
there is a green twin that someone put into the archives here that they say was glassed by Bunger’s. I don’t use them myself - since I like to glass - but I do have one of Charlie’s 9’6" shapes and the glassing on it is good. Probably call the shop and talk to 'em. Or look up Pistol Pete or the guy who runs ‘Natures Shapes’ I’d bet any would work with you on glassing. All that said I imagine the only ‘factory’ type of set up is Bunger’s.
Let us know what you find.
On the Short Longboards. One of my 7’3"B blanks is destined for a simple miniLB, single, big sweepy fin. those type of boards look like some fun.
Nice paint work, looks great. Would you mind sharing the dimensions on the speed demon/hibiscus one? I am looking to make something similar and like that outline. Thanks in advance and nice work. Peace and waves…
