Hi i'm about to build my first surfboard in the coming weeks and i want some advice on the shape and design of the board
I’m thinking of making something like Kelly Slaters deep six or Rusty Slayer basically a wider thicker and shorter board for bigger and better waves, it will probally be used mostly in reef breaks and big beaches here in Ireland.
i’m about 5’8"(170cm), 155lb (70kg)
I was thinking about shaping it 6’2" by 19 1/4" by 2 1/4" rounded pin
im looking for peoples personal opinions on how a board like this is to ride, how much rocker, tail and nose width and what type rail would suit the board
it will be my first board but in saying that i do understand alot about board design but im looking for other peoples opinions on what they feel would suit a board like this
I love making and riding boards like this. I am 5"10 180 lbs and just made this 6’2" x 19 7/8 x 2 1/2". So for your size I’d say go a little shorter (6’0") but your width and thickness look about right or perhaps go a tad wider and thicker. Keep the nose rocker just a bit under 5" and the tail rocker in the 2" range. Nose is just under 14" wide and tail about 14 1/2" on mine. I did a single concave to vee in the tail.
jamie the board you have there is pretty much the same as what i want short wide and thick
curious to know is your wide point moved above half way mark and what are your rails like
i’ll b making mine a thruster with glass on but what’s it like to ride as a quad??btw is the fin positioning the same as a normal shortboard or adjusted for bigger waves on a smaller board
That deep six looks more extreme (narrower tail) than the off-the-rack slayers and rock ups. I think he took the tail off a 7’ pipe gun or something for that one.
Anyway, I have made ones with wide point around 2" forward in the past and they are good. For the one pictured, I tried to bring the wide point a bit more toward center, the logic being it will be a bit easier to pull into the tube right on takeoff without too much foam/width on the front side of the rocker. Could be a silly theory but we’ll see how it goes. Should be able to ride it for the first time in good surf tomorrow and thursday.
Rails are pretty low volume. I like to get easy rail penetration, especially on windy/choppy days when this board will get alot of action.
Fin placement is 11 1/4 fronts; 1 1/4" from the rail, toed at 1/4"; quad rears are at 5 1/2"; 2" from rail; toed 3/16", thruster fin is at 3 1/4"
I always ride mine as quads, which love for the speed out of the gate. I put the thruster box in there to perhaps try the Slater/Mattison nub fin for a bit more stability (yes I am impressionable).
In any case, I think this is a pretty simple, good shape to attack on your first try. Relatively smooth curves and nothing too extreme. Good luck…
Oh, and by the way, US Blanks has a Rusty Designed blank made for these types of boards. The 6’0" R and the 6’5" R. I used the 6’5" for this one. You should try to find the 6’0" if you can in Ireland.
thanks for the heads up on the blanks but i found it hard to get any blanks here in ireland but i’ll be buying one tomorrow so it’ll depend on what the shaper has stocked
as for the quads i’d love to try one out but as this is my first board i won’t be investing in a fin istallation kit quite yet and anyway glass ons seem a no brainer to me,easier install processc and cheaper
