I have seen a lot of shortbaords in surf shops with a little extra resin beyond the nose. I can’t find a picture of it, but it looks like maybe 1/4" of resin that follows the contour of the board and extends beyond the stringer/foam - no glass, just resin. My question is twofold:
1- Anyone know what this “extra” resin is all about? What function does it serve?
2- If useful, does anyone have any tips on how to add this to my board? I am in the hotcoat phase and I am guessing this is where this comes in but not sure.
Like this pic? a bit of extra durability when storing boards on the nose? that’s why I do it anyway. Though I think a bead of straight resin would just crack off. cut your lam glass to leave a bit hanging off the tip when laminating bottom, the curl should form a little cup. when you flip to lam the other side let resin fill it in along with a bit of your lam glass hangin again. let it build up then when hard you can grind it shape it to your liking
Helps stop the nose from chipping and is put “on” at the glassing stage. Making the funnel out of fibreglass and filling it with resin is a real bitch to learn though.
Perfect – exactly what I was looking for – thanks to you both. I am building my 1st board and I am past the glass stage so I am going to have to pass on the extra resin. I guess I will just buy one of those nose guard rubber triangles to protect my nose. Anyway – thanks for the function and explaining how to do it!
